Information for students:
In order to meet the requirements for Academic Purposes 2, all students must write a Cause and Effect essay citing reasons from various sources.
Cause and Effect Essay
Question: Discuss the effects of ……… on society.
Possible Cause Examples:
• 3d printing (design, IT and business students)
• antibiotics (health students)
• preservatives/food additives (catering and hospitality students)

Write a cause and effect essay based on at least 6 references (2 journal articles, 2 industry sources and 2 government sources)

In order to successfully complete this assignment, follow the steps listed below:
• Write 6 paragraphs: introduction, 2 cause paragraph, 2 effect paragraphs, conclusion, reference list (separate page)
• Read references to find evidence to support your 2 cause paragraphs and/or your 2 effect paragraphs
• See that you have explained the main reasons for the causes (e.g. why was there a need for antibiotics or plastic)
• See that you have explained the main effects of these causes (e.g. an environmental effect such as pollution from plastic or a health effect from food additives)
A well-structured Cause and Effect essay must include:
• A cover page clearly stating your name, student ID, title of the essay, your teacher’s name and word count
• An appropriate introduction
• A critical analysis in 2 cause paragraphs and 2 effects paragraphs
• An appropriate conclusion in which you summarize the main points
• A reference list following the APA 6th referencing conventions

The mark for each competency represents the level to which these criteria have been fulfilled. The overall mark for this assignment is determined from the average of the above areas of competency.
Minimum requirements to pass:
• EAP1 exit 5.5: achieve a minimum of grade 2 in at least three competencies and a grade higher than 2 in the remaining competency (first block), and a minimum grade 2 in two competencies and a grade higher than 2 in the remaining two competencies (second block). This grade represents 20% of the final mark.
• EAP2 exit 6.0: achieve a minimum of grade 2 in one competency and a grade higher than 2 in the remaining three competencies (first block), and a minimum grade 3 in all four competencies (second block). This grade represents 20% of the final mark.

Assignment 2 Speaking
Information for students:
In order to meet the requirements of English for Academic Purposes 2 all students must prepare and participate in a TED talk-like presentation followed by a class discussion.
Seminar Discussion
• This is a team assignment focusing on your ability to deliver a presentation and conduct a class discussion
• You and your partner(s) are required to prepare a short talk on a topic related to your field of study (your choice of topic must be approved by your teacher)
• After you have completed your presentation, you are required to facilitate a whole class discussion on the topic you put forward in your talk
Learning Outcomes:
• Can deliver well-structured talk about a subject that is of relevance to their field of study
• Can clearly give discussion points
• Can help to focus and direct discussion by summing up what has already been said
• Can exchange and challenge ideas appropriately
• Can change the direction of a discussion
Length: approximately 10 min. presentation + 20 min. discussion
Date due: First draft due on Monday week 4

Final presentations delivered in week 5 on Monday and/or Tuesday
The following components must be included in your presentation:
• Prepare notes for your audience outlining key terms and concepts, which will be given to your classmates prior to the talk.
• Prepare a list of questions to facilitate a discussion following your talk and submit them to your teacher prior to your talk.
• You and your partner will facilitate the discussion together.
• Where relevant, accompany your talk with visuals such as photos, charts, tables etc. 5-6 slides per student.
• On the day of your presentation submit a soft copy of your work printed as a handout with up to 8 slides on each page and a cover page clearly stating your name, student ID, title of your presentation, your teacher’s name and date.
