VIT 7.09 Vine Health Assignment

Introduction
In this assignment you are asked to study in detail the biology and epidemiology of a disease that commonly affects grapevines in New Zealand. The disease is Powdery Mildew of grapevines. Every aspect of the disease will be examined. You will examine its global history and introduction into New Zealand through to the latest methods of both chemical and biological control, and then to the future, where the research is going and also what effect climate change will have. You will also be required to compare it to other diseases.
The assignment is in three parts. Part one will deal with the biology of the disease and part two examines the epidemiology. In the third part you will take one area of the assignment that you found most interesting and create a presentation that you will present on an online forum. You will be required to view other student presentations and comment on them.
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to apply the principles of vine health by making you aware of the resources needed to understand and manage pests and diseases of grapes. The ideology is that being able to fully understand one disease and comparing that to others will give you the resources and ability to research and evaluate other pests and diseases you will encounter in the future.
Workload
The assignment should take 40 to 50 hours of independent study and this is reflected in the overall mark that is 40% of the entire course. Use the marking schedule to determine the depth and level that is required.
Submitting and Referencing
The assignment must be correctly referenced using the APA format. For help with this you can contact the library support services. Submit the completed assignments into the Turnitin along with a printed copy. There is a separate Turnitin drop box for parts one and two and a forum for posting part three. The forum is where you can view and comment on other students work.
The Assignment
The assignment is in three parts that are broken down into different tasks. These tasks are as follows:
Part One

During the discussion and where appropriate you will compare and/or contrast the disease to other diseases, and also, how climate change will affect this disease.

In the report you will study prevention and control methods of the disease and produce a written assignment covering the following areas:

Tasks for Part Three
? Using PowerPoint or similar technology produce a presentation that can be posted onto EIT online site
? The presentation should be between 20 and 30 slides
In this section you will study one aspect of the disease. You must first gain approval from your tutor on the subject matter you wish to research. The subject must include cutting edge research on the disease and must include your own evaluation, critical analysis and interpretation of this topic. You need to make sure the presentation is at the right level for the audience and you must justify your work using peer reviewed research.

Notes
1. This is a level seven paper so it has to reflect that
a. Use the appropriate language
b. Cover the topic in the appropriate detail
2. You will use Turnitin to submit parts 1 and 2. Any blatant cutting and pasting (either referenced or not) and the entire assignment will be rejected
3. You will also submit a printed copy of parts 1 and 2
4. Part 3 will be submitted in a forum
5. Part 1 & 2 must be a minimum of 2000 words each. There is no maximum word limit.
6. You will notice that part 1 is to be submitted much earlier than part 2. This is to give you the chance to make appropriate changes and rectify issues that you are having such as format, content and referencing
7. For part 2 you must use the New Zealand Novachem Manual or the New Zealand winegrowers Export Spray Schedule as a reference
8. For part 2 you should use tables when presenting information on sprays.
9. For part 2 you will need to describe sprayers and spray equipment that is used to apply the chemicals
10. You must include referenced photographs of the pest and diseases.
11. You cannot use EIT course notes in any references.
You can only use journals or text books as references.
12. You will automatically lose marks if you use the marking schedule as headings
13. Where the marking schedule requires you to compare and/or contrast to other diseases:
Use Downy Mildew or Botrytis bunch rot but make sure there is a relevant connection
i. I.e. they have similar symptoms but it may differ slightly in some way in which case you need to show this, they are controlled the same way using similar chemistry, they have the same type of pathogen etc.
ii. Do not make this a separate section but include this in the body of your text
14. For part 3 make sure your background for the disease is no more than two slides
15. For part 3 it is essential that you put in your own opinion and critical analysis on the topic you have chosen. Note that a critical analysis by you is 30% of the mark.
