Context:
Environmental scanning is a process used in strategic planning that assists companies in risk management. Thorough environmental scanning will consider all possible factors affecting the business climate, which influence the company’s day-to-day business operation. These factors may be internal; personnel/human resources, company structure, specialist skills and available resource/infrastructure or external; political climate, the economy, trends and natural phenomena.
The information collected in an environmental scan is key in formulating and executing a strategic business plan and risk management plan when needed. The scan data helps identify areas in the company of strength and weakness and understand opportunities and threats that the business needs to consider or investigate further. The scanning exercise provides a foundation for decision making in all areas of the business and guides plans for growth and development.
