Recent Question/Assignment

Hello, this is Ibrahim

I am doing the EWB challenge for the village of Sandikhola in Nepal, it a a bit poor village and we are as engineers should provide them with any kind of help
In my team we have decided to focus on their transportation, and we came up with the idea of building aerial rope-ways for transporting goods up and down the hills.
However, my chapter is about the options that we have for the aerial rope ways. So it should include the different types and the advantages and disadvantages of these types and where it has been used (we may provide some examples). I have found a couple of options (Each chapter should be 7 to 10 pages long)

Option 1 – Electrically powered aerial ropeway
Option 2 – Gravity powered aerial ropeway

We might add some more depending on the research, but the main thing for me I would like to have some thing that can save some money while it's a poor village, and in the main time some of them can be used in different ways which can help the citizen over there.

The most important in he draft is the resources that I got the information from which should be reliable and well referenced (Harvard referencing).

So here are some articles that I believe it might be useful.

and here is some useful information about the resources in Nepal, from the EWB challenge website.

However, as a draft this is the important points.(This message from the teacher)

The topic handbook outlines what is expected the the individual report. Many people seem to have the wrong idea, so please read this carefully.

The individual reports of the group should make up a collective draft. Each team member should be doing a different part of the report, otherwise you're just wasting time. It's up to your group how to divide the report up.

To start with, you should think about your whole project and draw up a common table of contents for the chapters and sections your group expects to complete in the final report. There is plenty in the topic handbook and past EWB reports to do this. To help me put the pieces together when marking, I'd like each team member to have a common table of contents noting who did which bit. Note: this doesn't have to be final.

I expect that you should be able to complete the first few chapters:

Firstly, a broad background about the community. Here you demonstrate that you understand the problem before you implemented any solution, and research the community so that could make an informed decision about the project in the decision phase.
Next, ideation is about creatively generating multiple possible solutions for the project.
Then you use well defined selection criteria based on the clients requirements and recommendations, and the project restrictions, and you use these to choose the best solution for the project.
After selecting the best solution, you start to do some research specific to that solution and describe the solution in more detail. What are the components of the solution? What materials might you need? Are these materials available? What skills are needed? How will you communicate your idea to the community? and so on...
I also covered sustainability, which I'm about to post about in a separate forum. And this can be explored a little too.
So, the first four points can be completed in full at this stage. I don't want you to come up with a full detailed design, but you should be on your way with the right research.

There is no marking rubric because each individual report is different. However, markers can see who has put some effort in, and who hasn't. When students try to bluff their way through by writing 'hot air' it's pretty obvious, so make sure you backup your words with references, and be specific - don't use vague 'motherhood statements'.

Remember, in the end, your device is not expected to be complex and technically perfect. The EWB project is mostly about the journey, how you communicate, and how well you align with the client requirements.
