VAM3122 Fluid Mechanics 2
Semester 2, 2016
Experiment 1
Worth 10% of final grade.
Experiment:
You are to use a Pitot static tube to determine the velocity profile at a single location within the wind tunnel.
• Prepare a plot of non-dimensional distance from the floor versus non-dimensional velocity. Compare with White’s Figure 7.5.
• Determine Reynolds number, skin friction coefficient, coefficient of drag, boundary layer thickness and free stream velocity.
The Report:
Write your own report, if I get two the same, both get ZERO. You must create your own plots, tables, equations etc.
The report must contain:
• College of Engineering and Science cover page, signed with all group members names and ID’s.
• Introduction. 1-2 paragraphs explaining why you are doing this research and what you are doing. Include a labelled sketch (or CAD or photo) of the experimental equipment. (NOT method in point-form, NOT a list of equipment)
• Discussion of Results: This will be the biggest section of your report. It will introduce and discuss your results. Tables and Figures will be appropriately numbered and labelled; they will be referred to in the text. Relate the experiment to turbulent flat plate boundary layer theory.
• List of References
• Students are to grade their own work according to the scheme below.
Page Limit: 8 pages (the marking scheme and the cover page do not count)
Due: Wednesday Week 12 by 9 am.
Late submissions will receive a penalty of 10% after 9 am on the due date and a further 10% at 9 am each day (including weekends). VU Collaborate will be used to determine the time of submission.
Submission: Must submit a hard copy and a digital copy through VU Collaborate.
This page must be attached to your report.
