ASSIGNMENT 3: MECHANICAL SERVICES
The plans, elevations and section for a proposed office development are available on vUWS. They include seven A3 sheets numbered “Drawing 1” to “Drawing 7” inclusively. The project is located in Bendigo, central Victoria.
For this design, Bendigo is Latitude 36046’ South, with 223m elevation above sea level.
Design the air conditioning and/or mechanical ventilation fans to Level 8 only. The air conditioned area will generally be occupied between 8:00am and 6:00pm, five days per week. It also needs to accommodate after hours operation independent of other floors. All air handling equipment will be off-the-shelf units, located in the plant room on level 8. However, where necessary auxiliary equipment may need to be accommodated externally (i.e. on the roof in the case of condenser water cooling). It will be necessary provide detail(s) of your selection of units and fans.
Design Parameters
The air conditioning system is to provide performance-based comfort conditions within the air conditioned spaces only. Design parameters which form the basis for design include:
INDOOR OUTDOOR CONTROL TOLERANCE
Summer: 25.00C DB / 50% RH 36.50C DB / 22.00C WB +/- 10C
Winter: 21.00C DB 1.00C DB +/- 10C
Inherent system characteristics must be chosen to limit internal RH to not more than about 50% under most ambient conditions. Assume non-conditioned internal space summer temperature will peak at 31.50C DB on the hottest day.
The following information is to be used in the air conditioning cooling load calculations for the various spaces:
Occupancy: Assume office space @ 1 person / 11.0m2
Lighting: 16.5 watts/m 2
Equipment: 13.5 watts/m 2
Building structure: Refer drawings
Glazing: Single glazed, using Viridianglass VLamTM Bronze 6.38mm (see vUWS Viridian
file, p124, for details) to the operable walls and external door assembly in
recreation room and retail space.
Outdoor air quantity: To AS 1668.2
Café and toilet/change To AS 1668.2 and NCC (BCA)

Note: We are interested in summer conditions only so design for cooling equipment and disregard heating.
1. Heat load calculations [40% of assignment 3]
Carry out air conditioning load estimates using the Carrier method down to total grand heat. Calculate exhaust air quantities, and include:
(a) all calculations for U-values, or nominate sources
(b) calculations for peak solar gains through glass
(c) equivalent temperature difference calculations for walls and roof
(d) peak zone loads
(e) basis for outside air quantities and comparison with exhaust
(f) any other information necessary for design calculations
All the above items will be necessary in order to successfully complete the Carrier sheets [40% overall]
2. Psychrometrics and Equipment Selection [20% of assignment 3]
Plot the psychrometrics and check results. Select the air conditioning equipment from a reputable manufacturer’s catalogue (photocopy relevant pages), paying particular attention to entering and leaving temperatures on cooling coil, condenser air entering temperature, fan pressure and air quantity available.

3. Ductwork Design [40% of assignment 3]
Design the appropriate supply air and exhaust ductwork to the office, tea room, male and female toilets on the 8th floor. On a plan, indicate layouts and ductwork sizes, being sure to determine supply air quantities in a representative sample.
