Instructions: There are two parts to this assignment. You must complete both parts. Both parts have equal value in terms of your final mark. Both contain an either/or choice. In other words, you complete Part 1 (a OR b, it’s up to you) AND Part 2 (a OR b, it’s up to you).
Part 1 (you must complete this part)
EITHER (a): Discuss, with clear examples of bibliographic records, whether you believe RDA offers information seekers significantly greater opportunities for resource discovery than older bibliographic standards such as AACR2. For this part of the assignment, you must be able to produce examples from the Web, the literature or any other source you can find. (Students of the Librarianship specialisation are recommended to complete this option.)
OR (b): Select an ‘application profile’ other than AGLS that is used in the records and information management sector and explain whether and in what ways it addresses the specific application better than Dublin Core. For this part of the assignment, you must be able to produce examples from the Web, the literature or any other source you can find. (Students of the Records Management specialisation are recommended to complete this option.)
Part 2 (you must complete this part)
EITHER (a): Explain the points of similarity and difference between a bibliographic classification and a taxonomy. In each case, you must give examples that clearly demonstrate the function(s) that each of these performs. (Students of the Librarianship specialisation are recommended to complete this option.)
OR (b): Explain the points of similarity and difference between an ontology and a taxonomy. In each case, you must give examples that clearly demonstrate the function(s) that each of these performs. (Students of the Records Management specialisation are recommended to complete this option. It would also suit students of the Knowledge Management specialisation.)
