Problem 1 – Traffic flow theory and fundamentals (4*3=12% weight)
(a) From a point beside a road, a one way and one lane traffic stream is observed to consist of:
x A stream of cars travelling at 60 km/h with average headway of 8 seconds x A stream of trucks travelling at 40 km/h with average headway of 12 seconds Determine the LOS for the traffic stream. Assuming passenger car equivalent for cars and trucks as 1 and 1.5, respectively and Level of service (LOS) threshold for the given road as follows:

(b) Two vehicles pass over two closely spaced loop detector. Each detector has a detection zone of 2 m and the distance between the upstream edges of the two detection zones is 5 m. The time on (ton) and time off (toff) for each vehicle and for each detector in 1/30 second units are shown in the following table. Estimate the traffic density.

(c) Existing six-lane freeway (three lanes each direction) is growing in urban area. Using tables and equations provided in the class notes on Blackboard, calculate when should a fourth lane be added in each direction to avoid excess of demand over capacity. Assume commuter traffic and freeway design for sub urban area.

Problem 2 – Unsignalised Intersection (8% weight)
You have been asked to prepare a transport impact assessment for a proposed residential estate off Zinglemann Road at Klemzig. Figure 2.1 illustrates the “with-site” opening year weekday PM peak hour traffic projections for the year 2018 at the adjacent stop-controlled cross intersection of Zinglemann Road and Old School Road.
Assume that any pedestrians (flows not shown) give way to vehicle traffic. Assume that average queue storage required per vehicle is 6.0m. Stating any other assumptions you need to make, conduct an unsignalised intersection analysis in a spreadsheet table according to the following procedure:
(i) Identify the movement hierarchy at this intersection.
(ii) With the aid of Table 1 from your current EGB272 lecture slides (after Austroads 2010), stipulate the gap acceptance parameters for each opposed movement.
(iii) For each minor movement, identify the whole stream of opposing movements. Calculate the opposing flow using the methodology described in the current EGB272 lecture slides, and where applicable, the impedance of each opposed movement.
(iv) Estimate the capacity and degree of saturation of each movement using the theory described in the current EGB272 lecture slides. (Assume that the capacity of a major stream through movement is 0.5veh/s/ln and that of a left turn movement is 0.4veh/s/ln.)
(v) Estimate the capacity and degree of saturation of each lane. Compare with the standard unsignalised intersection practical degree of saturation of 0.80.
(vi) Estimate the average control delay of each lane and its HCM Level of Service from the table in the current EGB272 slides.
(vii) Estimate the design 95th percentile queue length on each lane. Identify for each right turn lane whether queue storage as shown in Figure 2.1 is adequate. Identify any implications to traffic on other lanes.
(viii) Discuss the suitability of the existing intersection form for opening year PM peak hour conditions.
