Core Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit you should be able to: Assessment Criteria
To achieve the learning outcome you must demonstrate the ability to:
1 Identify, reflect upon and evidence key areas for development and to stipulate areas of excellence in management practice • Critically evaluate your practice skills, for example, contributions to effective team work, decision making, problem solving and the generation of creative ideas, presentation, elevator pitches and business plans.
2 Develop positive and enquiring approaches to management and enterprise and to challenge existing preconceptions so as to integrate new knowledge for future application. • Deliver feasible solutions for a consultancy project negotiated with a client organisation
• Research, select and use creatively appropriate business and management theory to manage and complete a project in the context of a new situation.
• Use theory and show independence of thought in evaluating its usefulness in practice.
3 Apply theory to the simulated task of running a business, monitoring performance and adjusting decisions in the light of the success or failure in a competitive environment. • Increase the profit and / or the share price in the course of the business game, revising unsuccessful strategies.
• Critically appraise the complexity of management as shown in the implementation of strategic decisions.
• Explore in depth how academic theory helps (or not) to support managers in the implementation of plans and decisions.
Task:
Imagine that you have been assigned as the tutor for a group of students who are just starting the Airline Business Simulation. You are responsible for briefing them.
• What advice would you give them in order that they may be successful in running their airline?
• How would you advise them on creating a strategy and key performance indicators for their chosen sector?
• You should carefully identify models and influential theories (appropriately referenced) that would help the group and critically evaluate the relevance of these models and theories in informing decision making in the simulation so that they might achieve and advantage over their competitors in the industry.

Criteria 70% and above 60-69% 50-59% 40-49% 35-39% 1-34%
Theory Excellent use of appropriate sources and scholarly, professional and practitioner details are consistently high. Material follows systematically with direct relevance to objectives Very good use of appropriate theory (ies) using published sources introduced /from the MBA toolkit Good use of theory (ies) using published sources./ from the MBA toolkit Some use of theory (ies) using published sources./ from the MBA toolkit Weak identification of appropriate theories and models. No attempt to use published sources. .
Analysis An insightful and critical analysis of the relevance of theory to the practice of running a business. An insightful and critical analysis overall but the linkages and rigour will not be as explicit as for an A grade. There will be some omissions with respect to the clarity of argument and some of the analysis will have less strong evidence of originality. Good evidence of critical analysis but no great originality or organisation. There may be gaps in issues concerning scope and relevance and some reference to strategic issues but perhaps not fully or explicitly set out. Some analysis evident, but gaps in the reasoning and limited critical evaluation. Overly descriptive
The assignment is based on assertions and uncertain evidence. Arguments are weak and cannot be sustained No evidence of analysis
Conclusions Excellent conclusions are fully derived from in-depth critical analysis, supported by evidence. Very good conclusions derived from critical analysis but less in-depth than for an A grade. Good conclusions mainly derived from analysis. Some conclusions identified, but more a summary/not entirely derived from the analysis.
.The conclusions cannot be justified A random collection of statements based on the students own point of view with little or no attempt to draw analysis to conclusions.
Presentation and Referencing Clearly and concisely structured, sourced throughout and with a comprehensive bibliography in Harvard format.
