Students are to write a letter in response to the article analysed in assessment item 1. (Do not just reiterate the essay).
The letter can be addressed to the editor, politician such as; minister for health / education / correctional services etc. but you must identify them by name and their position. The stratagem should aim to generate an improvement in contemporary Indigenous health and welfare. This assessment is different form assessment 1; do not just reiterate what you have written in assessment 1.
Letter guideline:
1. This letter should be in a formal structure.
2. Identify whom the letter is addressed to and outline the purpose of writing the letter to the chosen recipient.
3. Include the social determinants of health identified in the article and their impact on contemporary Indigenous health and welfare with appropriate support from literature and statistics.
4. Conclude the letter with an outline of what you as a student registered nurse hope will result from sending the letter to the chosen recipient eg. Improvement in Indigenous health, different strategies used increased public awareness.
5. Use peer refereed sources only (e.g. Not Wikipedia) to support the discussion.
References may be the same as the ones used in Assessment item 1. References are to be included in the letter.
6. It is expected that presentation of the essay and referencing will be in accordance with the Faculty guidelines (Marks will be lost for incorrect referencing).
7. The Bibliography is to be attached to the letter and not to be included in the word count.

Choose ONE of the news articles provided in UTS Online under assessment item 1.
Identify and analyse the key social determinants of health presented in the article. Relate these social determinants of health to the contemporary health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The discussion should be supported by relevant literature and statistics.
Essay guideline
1. Introduce the chosen article and the all the social determinants of health to be discussed in the essay.
2. Analyse the social determinants of health that relate to the health of the Indigenous population today using appropriate literature and statistics to support the analysis.
3. Conclude the essay with a summary of the impact these social determinants of health have on the health and welfare of the Indigenous population.
4. Use peer refereed sources only (e.g. Not Wikipedia) to support the discussion. Assignments that do not just rely on the statistics presented in the article will attract higher marks. Students are NOT to use “the solid facts”.
5. It is expected that presentation of the essay and referencing will be in accordance with the Faculty guidelines (Marks will be lost for incorrect referencing).
6. The Referencing is to be attached and not to be included in the word count.
