Read chapter 1 -Definitions- in Karlsen's Language and Argumentation and answer both exercises 1 and 2 below. The answer must be between 300 and 350 words.
When experts participate in public debates, brief politicians, give a presentation to their colleagues, and the like, it is sometimes useful to define key terms they use. A researcher who, for example, participates in a public debate about the digitization of the public sector in Norway may find it appropriate to explain what she means by -digitalization-. A researcher participating in a policy briefing on renewable energy and the oil industry in Norway may think that it is good to first say what he means by -renewable energy-. In other words, experts sometimes use prescriptive definitions.
1- Give a normative definition of an expression from the subject you are studying. You must imagine that you will use the definition in a TV debate you will participate in. Remember to write the definition in the standard form for regulatory finitions.
2- Briefly explain the requirement for decidability and Karlsen's view on whether all definitions must meet this requirement.
3- Discuss why your definition does or does not meet this requirement.
