ASSESSMENT TASK ESSAY (CREATIVE WORK AND REFLECTION)
Length: 1200 words
Purpose: Create a work that represents a theme discussed during the semester. Then write a reflection (essay format), which clearly explains the relationship between the creative work, the theme and at least 3 or 4 principles of Catholic Social Thought (CST).
Part 1
First identify one of the themes from the list:
• The meaning and value of communities;
• Ubuntu (I am because of who we all are) and flourishing;
• Virtues the “good life” and flouring;
• Human Dignity and justice;
• The Golden Rule and advocacy;
• Self, community and belonging (local or national);
• Self, community, and interconnectedness.
Then think about the ways in which the theme connects with your own experience of a community that you belong too. The community can be small or local (possibly a family, or a local volunteering group); or bigger on a national level such as a civic community or online community.
Finally, create a work that expresses the theme that you have chosen, and the way it connects with the community you belong too. This work should also relate to some of the principles of CST.
The creative work should be 300 words (1 page @ 1.5 spacing) or equivalent of 2 pages if it is an artwork. The artwork should be displayed on one page and accompanied by an artist statement.
Examples of a creative works include:
• a diary entry;
• a letter addressed to a political party/ leader, your local member, a leader in the community, the Prime Minister, and so on;
• a short story;
• a poem;
• a piece of art e.g. a photo, a sketch, a painting, a collage, a short film etc.
Part 2
Here you write a personal reflection (essay format) on the work that you have created, explaining the relationships between Part 1, the theme and 3 or 4 principles of CST.
Suggested Structure of Part 2 of Assignment 3:
Introduction (100 words)
In the introduction to the essay, you should introduce to the reader what you will address in the assignment.
Guiding questions: What theme will you discuss? What CST principles will you discuss? Briefly, how is the theme and the CST principles represented in the creative work (Part 1)? Briefly, introduce your experience in a community and how it is represented in the creative work.
Paragraph 1 Theme and Creative Work (250 words)
1. Identify one community (local or national) that you belong too.
2. Explain how the theme you have chosen is relevant to an experience that you have had within this community. Example your experience.
3. Then, discuss how the theme is represented in your creative work.
Paragraph 2 CST Principle 1 (250 words)
1. Choose and state a CST principle.
2. Define and explain in your own words what the CST principle means. This should not be copied word for word from Assignment 2.
3. How is this principle relevant to the theme you have chosen?
4. How is this principle represented in the creative work?
Paragraph 2 CST Principle 2 (250 words)
1. Choose and state a CST principle.
2. Define and explain in your own words what the CST principle means. This should not be copied word for word from Assignment 2.
3. How is this principle relevant to the theme you have chosen?
4. How is this principle represented in the creative work?
Paragraph 2 CST Principle 3 (250 words)
1. Choose and state a CST principle.
2. Define and explain in your own words what the CST principle means. This should not be copied word for word from Assignment 2.

Conclusion (100 words)
In the conclusion do not introduce any new information or quotes. This is where you wrap up your final thoughts and main points, combining all important information with an emotional appeal that resonates with the reader.
