Case Study – Spring Semester, 2014
THE SCENARIO
Cable Right Pty Ltd (CRPL) is a consulting company that advises clients about technical requirements and solutions options available for their networks. Clients who accept advice from CRPL use this information to decide which option they will implement in their corporate structure. As a result CRPL must always provide a costed range of options for their clients.
Currently they have a small IT start-up client, IT Online Pty Ltd that is entering the market for the first time. This client has its office in Penrith and will employ a number of mobile workers who are responsible for installations and repairs. They also have two home office locations for online support and advice. These are located at Narellan in the south and Kellyville in the north. The following network is currently required:

There is expected to be a growth of 100% in the Penrith office over the next 5 years, and so this level of infrastructure should be built into the current requirements.
Mobile Workers will be employed in other Australian cities. They will be individual employees who are based from their home, but will be able to travel anywhere the company requires. They are primarily technical people who will provide installation and sales support in the cities where they live. This team of Teleworkers is expected to grow to 20 employees over the next 5 years.
All Internet connections will pass through the company’s portal at Penrith, where the company’s server is located. From Penrith each home office site will be connected using point-to-point fibre connections providing high bandwidth to those sites.
IT Online Pty Ltd (ITO) has provided the following Networking Plan shown in the diagram below.

REQUIREMENTS
Cable Right Pty Ltd (CRPL) must design the network requirements for the IT Online Pty Ltd (ITO) network. As employees of CRPL your team will be required to develop an implementation plan for the ITO Pty Ltd network, including all costs, for all of the following:
1. The type of media you propose to use at Penrith and at the two home office sites. This must be adequate to allow for the 100% expansion of the ITO Pty Ltd network at Penrith and must be adequate to meet the future requirements at each home office. Your recommendations must also include provision for increasing bandwidth needs anticipated for the future (5 years and beyond). Whilst the actual lengths of media chosen are not required, the cost of media chosen should be included as a cost per metre price. Installation requirements and costs must also be considered. You must justify your choice of media. Remember this might include copper, fibre and wireless options within the different sites. The fibre links between Penrith and the two Home Office sites will be supplied by the company’s ISP and are therefore not to be included in the above media requirements. For comparative reasons, alternative media solutions should be considered.
2. You are required to subnet ITO Pty Ltd’s network IPv4 Address using VLSM. You will be required to provide summary tables with IP Address ranges for all hosts in your network. When allocating addresses you must allow enough addresses for the 100% expected future expansion and additional hosts at Penrith, as well as point-topoint addresses for the mobile workforce (teleworkers) as they will be communicating via VPN links. Additionally, you need to allocate IP Addresses for networked printers. You need to allow one (1) printer for each site. Printers will have the last usable address within the subnet to which they belong. For the Penrith site the printer should be on a separate subnet for all users to access. The server, located at Penrith, will be in a separate subnet, and must be allocated a static IP Addresses within that network.
3. IPv6 Addresses will be added now for future use. Use the table below for IPv6 addresses.
4. You must detail the hardware (switches, routers) that ITO Pty Ltd requires. This must include full reasons for selecting particular hardware type (model numbers), remembering that each device must be adequate for the ITO Pty Ltd’s requirements at the location where it is placed. You must consider potential bandwidth usage for each link when making the decisions and include expected bandwidth for future expected expansion. Each site will require a minimum of one router, and also a number of switches determined by Cable Right Pty Ltd. The details about computers, servers and printers are not required for this Case Study.
5. You must justify the type of network topology you propose to use at each ITO Pty Ltd location. A logical topology diagram for each location should be included in your report.
6. ITO Pty Ltd expects to conduct its business via the Internet. Communication on the Internet is therefore essential. Select and fully justify the type of Internet access you propose to have for ITO Pty Ltd. This must be scalable to allow for future growth and needs. The Point of Presence (POP) is located at Penrith.
7. As a model for explaining your proposal to ITO Pty Ltd, each team member will build their network using Packet Tracer 6.1. This model will include all IPv4 and IPv6 addresses required and use EIGRP routing protocol. This working model will be part of the delivery requirements and will support the written report.
Note:
Your Instructor can ask any student about the Packet Tracer working model.
DO NOT MAKE one model for your team and copy it for each group member. It is expected that each group member will make their own Packet Tracer model independently of all other group members, and be able to answer questions about their working model.

ITO Pty Ltd has purchased the IPv4 Address ____________ (supplied by your instructor) from its ISP for addressing all hosts within their network. Using VLSM, subnet this IPv4 Address range to provide addresses for all required hosts within the ITO Pty Ltd network. This addressing scheme should allow for the 100% growth at Penrith, all home office requirements and Teleworker addresses . Complete the table below (that shows a sample of required subnets, but must be expanded to show them all). The IPv6 Address 2001:daf2:ebb1::/48 has been obtained by ITO Pty Ltd for all IPv6 address.

Additional Information
1. Apart from the IPv4 Addresses, you are not required to supply any WAN link information. This includes fibre cables, VPN connections, and any security issues relating to those links.
2. All Home Offices can be considered an extension of the ITO Pty Ltd network, and so the IPv4 Addresses allocated must be reflected in the overall addressing scheme for ITO Pty Ltd.
3. The only media requirements required are those internal for each site.
4. Hardware (such as routers and switches) should reflect expected usage. Therefore, low usage environments such as those for the Home Offices, would require different hardware than high usage areas, such as those at Penrith.
5. Internet Access for the entire company, the Point of Presence (POP), is through the Penrith Office. This connection should be sufficient for all current users, and scalable to allow for the expected increase over the next 5 years.
6. Teleworkers will use VPN connections from a variety of sites into the Penrith Office. Each teleworker should be considered a point-to-point network for IPv4 Addressing (and subnetting).
Assignment Submission
The assignment submission should take the form of a report that thoroughly details the reasons for decisions made, as well as the actual decisions made. Alternate solutions with appropriate costing should also be included where appropriate. You should ascertain actual costs by searching the Internet. Provide all your costs in Australian dollars. (Note: Many web sites are US based. Take care not to quote prices in US dollars.)
The total length of the report is 2500 words. In addition you should include a Title Page, Index Page and a page listing all references. These additional pages are not to be included in this word count. Be sure to number all pages in your report.
An Executive Summary is also required, and should be no more than 200 words. This is in addition to the 2500 word report.
All information sources must be appropriately acknowledged and a full bibliography is required.

It is expected that this will be completely your own work. Therefore using the ‘cut and paste’ technique is not acceptable. You should read relevant material, and then write your report in your own words. This report must be submitted to turnitin, and so will be checked for plagiarism. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
This Case Study is to be done as a group of four (4) students or a group of three (3) students. It is expected that all students will contribute equally in all aspects of this Case Study. Each student in every group will be required to complete a feedback form detailing each group member’s commitment, and this will be used to adjust marks for students who do not commit themselves fully to the Case Study requirements.
Students who have difficulty working with their group must inform their instructor immediately a problem occurs so that a resolution for the difficulty can be made. If no such contact is made it will be assumed that no problem exists and no later student protests will be accepted.
Much of the work can be based on research carried out on the Internet, and reading the
Cisco Online curriculum as well as the Structured Cabling Supplement found on UTS Online, but many other sources are available. All information obtained must be fully referenced using the Harvard method. It is expected that each student will spend approximately 24 hours on this Case Study.
The Case Study report is due by 11.59 pm on Sunday of week 11 (12/10/14) as a soft copy submitted to turnitin via UTS Online. Only one group member per group is to submit the soft copy on behalf of the whole group, because multiple copies will show 100% similarity. A hard copy must also be delivered to your Instructor at the beginning of your Monday (13/10/14), Tuesday (14/10/14) or Wednesday (15/10/14) lab session. The Packet Tracer file is NOT uploaded to turnitin, but must be submitted electronically to your Instructor during the week 11 lab sessions.
Late assignments will incur a penalty of 15% per day. No assignments will be accepted after 7 days (100% marks) as the mark for this assignment will then be zero (0). The submission time and date will be that shown on the receipt received from your submission to turnitin. You are strongly advised to upload your Case Study at least an hour before the deadline as problems do sometimes occur that result in late submissions. A time stamp of Monday 13/10/14 00:01 will be penalised as late.
Note: Turnitin will be made available a week prior to the submission date. You may upload your Case Study any time during that week. The similarity report will not be made available.
This case study will assess the listed objectives and related graduate attributes stated in subject outline.
It is expected that the Case Studies will be marked by week 12 (Monday 20/12/14,
Tuesday 21/10/14 or Wednesday 22/10/14)) and returned in that lab session.
Appropriate comments, where necessary, will be written on the marked Case Studies. If this deadline is not met, marks will be posted on UTS Online against student ID numbers, and an email will be sent to all students, with the Case Studies returned in week 13.
There is no minimum mark required for this Case Study. Students who fail to attain 50% for it will need to work harder in other assessment items to make up the deficit.

ASSESSMENT
This Case Study is marked out of 100 marks and is worth 20 percent (20%) of the overall assessment for this subject. The length of the report for this case study should be a maximum of 2500 words plus 200 words for the Executive Summary. Diagrams, tables and figures can be in addition to this length. You should explain their contents in the body of your text. DO NOT USE TABLES as a substitute for written text. If this is done your word count for the Case Study will be increased. Text should be formatted as 10pt/11pt A4 with double line spacing or 12pt with single line spacing. Incorrect formatting will be penalised.
Remember, this Case Study will be written as a report. There will also be a Packet Tracer file required from each group member.
