Assignment 1 Writing
Information for students:
In order to meet the requirements of English for Academic Purposes 1 all students must write an opinion essay, further developing ideas and opinions discussed in their presentation.
Balanced Opinion Essay
• Your essay is based on the research you conduct in preparation for your presentation
• You should include at least two arguments for and two arguments against the issue you have chosen
• You will also include your own opinion in the conclusion
Learning Outcomes:
• Can demonstrate effective academic writing skills
• Can write an essay giving information or giving reasons in support of and against a particular point of view
• Can reference quotations appropriately and avoid plagiarism
Word count: 500 -600 words
Date due: First draft due on Monday in week 3
Final essay due on Tuesday in week 4
A well-structured essay must include:
• A cover page clearly stating your name, student ID, title of your essay, your teacher’s name and date
• An appropriate introduction that includes: background information, the aim (the outcome you hope to achieve), the thesis statement of the report and the scope
• At least two arguments for and two arguments against the issue you have chosen discussed in the body of your essay
• An appropriate conclusion in which you summarise the main points and add your opinion
• A reference list following the APA 6th referencing conventions
