Description:
Assessment 1 (Research Proposal: Report Format)
This is an individual student Assessment. Max 2,000 – 2,500 words
Research Design
Students are provided by the lecturer a series of scenarios and situations to choose from based around real life situations in the Australian societal landscape. Students then individually select one scenario subject to the final approval of the lecturer. Based on the scenario selected, students design and develop a written research proposal to conduct primary and secondary research to determine a consumer need, product or digital media project opportunity, or need for a communication campaign.
The written Research Plan must include:
? A written statement of the research design, including a statement explaining the purpose of the study
? Identification of the research problem and research objectives
? A comprehensive description of the intended research methodology
? An outline of the procedures associated with each stage of the research process
? A summary of findings and insights expected from the research
This Assessment 1 also includes a Class Performance Review component covering contribution throughout all assessment tasks and contribution to classwork and discussion over the trimester. This is an individual mark added to your group mark for the final grade.

Marking Criteria & Rubrics:
Criterion 1: Research Problem – 25%
Fail: Poor effort, no clear problem definition
Pass: Passable effort, some analysis of situation and problem is somewhat clear
Credit: Good situation analysis and clear problem definition
Distinction: Excellent effort into problem definition based on insightful situation analysis
High Distinction Outstanding effort, could be published
Criterion 2: Research questions and objectives – 25%
Fail: Poor effort, unclear research questions and research objectives
Pass: Passable effort, research questions and research objectives clarifies what the research hopes to accomplish
Credit: A good statement of research questions and research objectives that clarifies ambiguity about what the research hopes to accomplish
Distinction: Excellent effort, a well-written statement of research questions and research objectives that clarifies any ambiguity about what the research hopes to accomplish
High Distinction Outstanding effort, an excellent written statement of research questions and research objectives clearly articulates what the research hopes to accomplish
Criterion 3: Research methodology design and procedures – 30%
Fail: Poor effort, did not follow the research design process, poor layout and poor written clarity within the proposal
Pass: Passable effort, an acceptable design with some flaws and passable layout and passable written clarity within the proposal
Credit: Good research design, adequately addresses all stages of the research process, good layout of written proposal, good layout and good written clarity within the proposal
Distinction: Excellent research design, comprehensively addresses all stages of the research process, excellent layout and excellent written clarity within the proposal
High Distinction Outstanding effort, could be published
Criterion 4: Class Performance Review – 20%
0-20 marks overall You will be awarded up to 20 marks based on the review of your participation and contribution to the class as well as your week by week contribution to trimester class discussion and participation. It will also be assessed by your group members and lecturer throughout Assessments 1 to 2. This is an individual mark added to your group mark for the final grade.
13-20 The student worked well together with others to achieve objectives. The student contributed in a valuable way to the project. All forms of interaction indicated a high level of mutual respect and collaboration.
7-12 The student worked well most of the time, with only a few occurrences of communication breakdown or failure to collaborate when appropriate. Student was mostly respectful of others in class.
0-6 The student did not collaborate or communicate well. Student would work
independently, without regard to objectives or priorities. A lack of respect and regard was frequently noted.
Assessment 1: Topics for choice
In this trimester all research projects will relate to the Covid19 Pandemic.
Please choose one sub-theme from the list below and have your lecturer provide a final approval for you to proceeded before commencing Assessment 1.
1. Trust in institutions, government, or experts – explore issue surrounding the extent to which society, or a convenient sample, perceives issues relating to trust and different institutional players in the pandemic.
2. Media influence – to what extend have different types, or a single type of media platform or channel, influenced the perceptions of society or a nominated convenient sample?
3. Consumer confidence – explore and measure the extent to which the pandemic has influenced consumer confidence. Short- and long-term perspectives could be studied.
4. Business confidence – explore and measure the extent to which the pandemic has influenced business confidence. This could be a single small business. Short- and long-term perspectives could also be studied.
5. The COVIDSafe app – Explore the obstacles and opportunities that relate to widespread adoption of the app in society or a particular group.
The more focused the better. Students should try to avoid broad research and concentrate on a particular aspect of an issue or topic.
