ASSIGNMENT 5 COMMUNICATION EVENT ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Mode of submission Online through FLO
Graded Weighting: 35%
Length: 1500 words
Due date: This is due two weeks after completion of PEP
During PEP students will identify one communication event (examples are - a telephone call, phone medication order, non-administration of a drug or a medication error, patient education episode, written and electronic documentation or any other appropriate communication event ) that they have PERSONALLY been involved in (NOT Handover). They will write a report describing the event, analysing the communication processes, and evaluating the degree to which the processes comply with venue policies and professional standards. Finally they need to reflect on how this event has influenced the way that they communicate within their own nursing practice.
Download and read the Assignment formatting guidelines for written assignments
The assignment will be structured in the following way
Introduction (10% about 150 words)
This should outline the general structure and content of the assignment. The specific event must be stated in the introduction.
Description of the Communication Event (30% i.e. about 500 words)
It cannot be an overview or amalgam of every similar event. This must be one single event where the student personally was involved in. This means that the student was an active participant by speaking and/or writing. The description must state where and when the event took place and who were involved. The student must give specific examples of what they said and describe how their contribution was received.
Analysis of the Communication Event (30% i.e. about 500 words)
Students are encouraged to return to the Communication Module in the topic as well as accessing the Communication POD on FLO. They should use these resources and others to analyse their communication style from both personal and professional communication style perspectives. The resources in the Clinical Governance POD may also aid in this analysis. As these events occurred at a clinical venue, the venue’s communication policies and procedures should also be examined to determine if the student met such requirements. Students are encouraged to search for journal articles from nursing and other health professional databases and include them in their analysis. There are many excellent articles available on both personal and professional communication. Remember that they need to be less than 10 years old, preferably 5 years old or less.
Influence of the event on the student’s own nursing practice (20% about 350 words)
Students need to reflect on what they have learnt from the event and their analysis of it.
In particular, they need to reflect on their own communication styles – both personal and

professional and whether they have changed or will change the way that they
communicate within their own nursing practice. Reference List (10% of marks)
• At least one or more of your textbooks should be used in your assignment and referenced
• There should be nursing journal articles pertinent to your argument
• Websites should be professional and/or academic and appropriate. They should make up only 10-15% of your reference list
Guidelines regarding references
• The word count for the assignment does not include the words in long quotes or the names and dates of the referenced material.
• References are expected to be your basic texts plus one extra reference (minimum) for every 250 words (The maximum grade you can obtain using only your basic texts is a high pass.)
• The reference list must be in alphabetical order and neither numbered or dot pointed
• Extra references must be from nursing journals and/or suitable professional or academic websites.
• Websites should only make up 10-15% of the Reference List.
• All referenced sources must be less than 10 years old (preferably 5 years or less) unless they are seminal sources.
• To obtain a mark higher than a high pass, you will need to look at further relevant text books, nursing journals and websites and cite them correctly.
• Chapters from books and secondary sources must be cited correctly.
• When paraphrasing give page numbers as well as the author and date.
• When referring to an article, refer to the author of the article, not that of the journal; for example ‘Carville et al (2007, p. 19) states that …’
• If quotations are longer than around 30 words, they should be set out in an indented block and set in a smaller typeface. They are usually introduced by a colon and do not use quotation marks. They can be italicised:
During young adulthood most people are single and have the opportunity to be on their own. Those who eventually marry or establish long-term de facto relationships experience several changes as they take on new responsibilities. Many couples choose to become parents. (Crisp & Taylor 2009, p. 206)
• Do not just write a quotation as a paragraph. You need to introduce quotations, saying how they relate to the point you are making; for example, ‘There are five stages of pressure ulcer development. Black et al (2007, p. 272) state that these are ’…
If you need extension please apply for one using the Assignment Extension request tool on the NURS2002 FLOsite. Please attach any documents that support your request for an extension i.e. medical certificate, counsellor’s letter, and computer repair information. Make sure you write the new due date that you are requesting. Be aware that you may not be given an extension or that the length of the requested extension may be shortened so continue to work on the assignment. Do NOT send me an email telling me that you have made the request and pleading with me to grant it. I get an email automatically informing me whenever a student puts in a request for an extension. I usually reply within 24 hours.
