Assessment Task 2- Practical Project and Report Documentation (40%)
Purpose of the assessment task:
This assessment task is designed to evaluate student’s following skills and abilities:
• Skills to evaluate client user requirements and hardware installation
• Skills to identify the most suitable network hardware and software equipment to meet client requirements
• Skills to install a range of network hardware by planning, managing and supporting the installation of new components in a network, according to organisational policies and procedures.
• Skills to develop, implement and maintain wireless networks
• Skills to install, configure and test the network according to client requirements, and produce appropriate documentation
• Skills to install, configure and test wireless access points
• Skills to test security and network to business specifications
• Skills to monitor and resolve wireless network issues.
• Skills to develop user training material
• Skills to identify possible security threats and secure the network.
In this assessment task, you are required to:
• Install and configure Network Hardware
• Install and configure wireless office network
• Test the wireless network
• Prepare user documentation for training
The practical part of this assessment will be observed directly by your assessor. You are also required to print out the screen shots (wherever possible) of each task you have performed to provide evidence and submit it with a cover page.

Scenario
Part A - Install and network hardware and Install and configure wireless office network
In continuation to Assessment 1, the you are required to install a networking hardware and configure the access point to the existing LAN and manage the services of a wireless network. The implementation of the wireless network includes the setup of access point, installation and configuration of the services of the access point. The assessor will act as the management authority and will provide all the network related hardware including wireless routers, WIFI adaptors/dongles and cables.
According to the given scenario perform all the following activities:
1. Prepare an Installation plan for the installation and configuration of a Wireless network for Devon Education. You will have to analyse the requirements of Devon Education for the implementation of the Wireless LAN. The installation plan should include the following:
o all hardware and software components required for this installation, configuration, and testing
o Floor plan survey/inspection to finalise access point counts and locations.
o WiFi design consideration according to the access points locations and equipment needed.
o Cabling and power arrangements
This is a paper based exercise. Write your installation plan, showing what has to be done, where items of equipment are to be located, where cables will run (think about power over ethernet if you are putting access points in the ceiling – less important if they are going to be located near existing power points. This design needs to use the equipment you recommended in the first assignment. You also need to specify the order in which you do the installation – taking into account the need to NOT disrupt the existing network until you are ready to migrate people to the new network. I.E. this is a continuation of assignment 1.
2. Install and configure the wireless router to manage the wireless access to the network. (Done remotely)
3. Connect the router's WAN port to your internet source, such as a DSL or cable modem, using the first network cable. (Done remotely)
4. Connect the laptop or computer to the wireless router. Configure the services of the router by accessing the web interface of the router. (You will remotely tell james how to connect his iPhone to the network you construct in step 2 above)
5. Add WPA2 security. Change the wireless network name (SSID). Update the MAC address of the router. (You will do this remotely – there is no point in changing the MAC address of the router because we are using TCP/IP – not some outdated protocol that needed the MAC address configured in a special way).
6. Configure the network security features on the wireless router and activate the Wi-Fi. (Done remotely)
7. Install and configure wireless network card in the desktops as per the requirements. (Can’t be done remotely, and all modern equipment comes with either WiFi or built in ethernet or both).
And fill the following template for the wireless network installation and settings. (We may need to change the table – it’s pretty crap unusable.

Part B - Test the wireless network
Once the installation of the wireless router is done and the access point has been accessed by the users, the student needs to test the wireless network for its optimal performance. The testing will ensure not only the verification of the wireless network but will also help to manage the security and firewall arrangements of the network. Your assessor will act as the IT Manager and will provide you all the testing and diagnostic tools for the wireless network.
According to the given scenario do all the following activities:
1. Test the access point (Yes) and update the wireless router firmware (Only check to see if there is an update – not applicable to all devices as some do this automatically outside the scope of the user – I’m talking about you, Telstra Sagem F@st 5355 piece of crap modem.
2. Apply application or use case testing as per the requirements (Done in step 1).
3. Test the security parameters along with the firewall configuration and settings to prevent unauthorised access to the wireless network. (If it is configured with WPA2 – that’s about all we can do).
4. Verifying the connection of the wireless router and the computers and assure the compatibility across multiple devices. (Look at the wireless modem and see what devices are connected)
5. Ensure that devices after authentication are connected with the wireless network. (Can only use WPA-PSK)
6. Test the pairing and log on procedures of the devices of the users. (Can only use WPA-PSK)
7. Install and configure a network monitoring software to monitor the following features of the wireless network using appropriate: (Can only look at the real-time stats and logs provided with the modem/router/access point device).

c. VoIP Traffic Windows
8. Resolve networking problems and ensure trouble free wireless connection by doing the following:
a. Check WAN and LAN connections
b. Verify wireless adapter
