HNN 217 Community Nursing Practice Assessment Task 1: Critical Reflection 1,500 words
Purpose of assessment task This assessment task will enable you to improve your understanding and knowledge about the importance of providing culturally safe health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This task is designed to assess the following Unit Learning Outcomes: 1. Explain the relationship between nursing, the social determinants of health, and primary health care. 2. Identify the roles and responsibilities of the nurse engaged in community health practice, including education of individuals, families, and carers. 3. Evaluate symptoms, functional status, and risk in the management of individuals, significant others and communities. 4. Identify participative, evidence-based health promoting interventions for individuals, families, and carers from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 5. Demonstrate integration of knowledge and skills by providing safe, effective care for individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds in community settings.
Topic background: There are links between health care equity, access and poor health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Community nurses can supply improved health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Assignment Question / Task Description: Discuss the importance of providing culturally safe health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Explore the relationship between cultural safety, equity and access to health care and reflect on the implications for your own nursing practice.

1. What was my previous understanding about the importance of cultural safety, equity and access to health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?
2. So what impact did learning about the concepts of cultural safety, equity and access to health care have on my attitude towards caring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples? Did it change your mind about anything?
3. How will your understanding influence your approach to caring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples using culturally safe care in improving access and equity in future?
