Instructions for assessor
This assessment task requires the student to lead and facilitate their team in implementing the project plan documented in Assessment 1. In addition to your role as assessor, you must act as the student’s manager/supervisor in this project.
Students need to demonstrate their ability to make decisions, resolve issues and develop team cohesion. They must also support their team’s goals and objectives, encourage responsibility for their own work, provide feedback, and serve as role models. They must hold progress meetings with their teams.
Prepare to provide students with feedback in the form of an issue about the team (e.g. fair distribution of work) or a complication (e.g. lack of resources or timeline crunch) to be worked through by the team led by the student.
Students are required to hold a project progress meeting in which they review team progress, and during which they present information on and evaluate their team’s performance in the project so far. The student must demonstrate formal thinking techniques, seek input from others and conduct training/coaching/mentoring sessions to address issues identified in their training planners. The student is required to report on any issues or problems the team has encountered, including conflict. (Conflict resolution skills will be addressed in Assessment Task 3.) Issues and action taken must be recorded in an issues log. Students are required to present feedback collected from their team on their effectiveness as a leader, and provide a brief reflection on their success as a team leader to you, the assessor, at a 15-minute informal progress meeting.
The student is also required to prepare a written project progress report, including their reflections, and submit minutes of the meeting to you, the assessor.
Students should understand that the content of their projects does not need to include highly technical information or completely accurate budgets or cost estimates. Learners are not expected to provide highly specific details regarding fields they lack experience in. Sufficient research on the project should be encouraged to facilitate understanding of team objectives and tasks.
Note: This assessment must take place during the group activities in Session 5.
Planning the assessment
Recommended date for assessment: During Session 5.
Time required for assessment may vary as required by individual work teams.
The student must:
• participate in a team project planning meeting
• participate in a meeting with management (assessor)
• submit:
? a project plan, with goals and objectives, deliverables and communications
? a portfolio of supporting information and at least one project management tool, such as a schedule, action plan, Gantt or milestone chart, a record of addressing innovation and productivity measures, a gap analysis and/or skills matrix, and training planners for each team member
? a team work schedule
? completed meeting agenda and meeting minutes templates of team planning meeting.
You will need to schedule two meetings with the student:
• initial meeting to approve (as management) the student’s project choice
A project progress presentation.
A 15-minute informal interview in which the student reports on their team’s progress mid-way through implementation of the project.
You should give the student the opportunity to inform you of any unresolved issues related to the team.
You may then give the student appropriate advice on how to deal with the issue (for example, mentoring or coaching) and the student should in turn communicate this back to the team.
It is important to provide feedback to the student that they will then be able to provide to their team in Assessment Task 2.
