WRITING YOUR MAJOR ESSAY AND TUTORIAL PAPER
For a major essay, the style is that of continuous formal prose. Headings, if used, should be kept to a minimum. Use footnotes to provide references to scholarship and the like, not for arguing your case.
The typical format of an essay is:
• Introduction
• Body (arguments)
• Conclusion
Briefly, the Introduction must do what it says, introduce what is going to be argued. The Body should outline the main arguments clearly and logically. The Conclusion which does not contain any new ideas should summarise what has been argued, then communicate the main reply to the question or task. In more detail:
The Introduction:
The aim of an introduction is to put the topic in your own words and say why it is worth the study. It is also the place to indicate how you will deal with the topic/question (i.e. your method).
The Body:
Points are the place where you present your proof to answer the question/topic.
• They are to be logical. That is, they are to be put together in such a way so they make sense. If it was possible to list the points, a sequence of argument should be clearly seen, e.g.
Proofs for inaccuracies in Josephus' writings
Proofs for accuracy in Josephus' writings
Arguments for your assessment of the accuracy of Josephus' writings
• The trick is to show your points in such a way that they do not look like a list.
Paragraphs are your means to be able to make your points and give your proof without your essay looking like a list.
• Use a paragraph for each point of your argument.
• Paragraph structure should look something like this:
• It is important to make paragraphs flow.
o Present the point you wish to make
o Expand on the point
o Show why your point is relevant to the topic (i.e. give proof)
At the end of each paragraph, make/use a ‘linking sentence’ that introduces the next paragraph. Such a sentence will often summarise the paragraph.
At the beginning of the next paragraph, use a sentence that refers back to the previous paragraph; e.g. for the topic of ‘high versus low chronology’
To start the discussion, Finkelstein, Fritz, Devers, and Thompson present proofs in support that Israel and Judah were not fully-fledged kingdoms until the time of the Omrides. These are … The cumulative effect of their proofs is that their arguments are very persuasive.
• The evidence for low chronology seems good. However, other scholars such as Na’aman, Rainey and Hess draw attention to …. They also note that some evidence is ambiguous, noted also by Miller and Hayes … Consequently, …
• Clearly, one has to interpret the material evidence in some fashion …
• The last paragraph before the conclusion should have a ‘linking sentence’ that prepares for the conclusion.

The conclusion:
The conclusion is the place to summarise the argument and state in a sentence or two why you believe you have answered the question or the topic. It does not include any new information.
As you read journal articles in particular, you will find that this format of writing is nearly universal, even if headings are not used to indicate which section of the article you happen to be reading at the moment. If you can quickly adopt this format in your studies, you will find it will be of great help as you continue with your studies. It is also necessary to use if you continue on with higher degree study.
In Essays, the prose style is to be ‘formal’; that is, good English with a minimum of colloquialisms, contractions, slang, and language that can only be understood in your social scene or ‘in-group’. Obviously you will learn technical terms appropriate to this unit, but when writing, keep it in check! I will not be impressed if you use ‘big words’ but do not understand what such words mean! Grammar and spelling will need to be the best you are able to do. If you have trouble with grammar, keep sentences short! I recommend setting your word processor to ‘Australian English’ or ‘British English’ (if Aussie English is not available) to assist with the spelling checker and grammar checker if you use these functions.

please see attached referencing style, its
When doing your assignments, the required style is:
• Use footnotes for references
• Put the full bibliographic details when you use a resource for the first time.
• Use author, short title, page number/s for subsequent references to a given work (or author, op. cit, page/s).
• A full bibliography is required at the end of the assignment.
The Harvard “author-date” system is also acceptable.

Please see details re articles to use for the assignment, 2500 words. and off course its important to do the references and bibliography. the idea of references and bibliography are so you locate the information you write about. I hope you understand.
