Performance Management
Written Assessment 1 – Short report on a case study
Referencing: American Psychological Association (APA)
2000 words ? 10% (excluding title page, references and appendices only)
Aims:
This assessment item aims to develop the following course learning outcomes as stated in the course profile. The ability to:
1. Describe the major concepts and techniques concerned with the way in which organisations manage their people.
4. Explain the major reward practices and their implications in performance management.
Purpose:
The purpose of this assessment item is for you to demonstrate your ability to construct an in-depth and critical analysis of a Performance Management topic by using, and correctly citing, a range of relevant scholarly literature. This literature must be used to justify and support your reasoning. Managers will often do this in the world of work to develop evidence based best practices. You’ll develop an understanding of performance management processes, concepts and techniques and an ability to problem solve to explain major reward practices and their implication in performance management. In doing so you are expected to use appropriate conventions of Report writing: structure, language, length and tone.?You’ll also be expected to appropriately use the American Psychological Association (APA) referencing system which will be quite new to many of you.
Details:
The assessment item is based on the case study titled “Disrupted links in the performance management process at Omega Inc,” of the textbook (Aguinis, 2013, p. 55) and Figure 1 in the textbook (Aguinis, 2013, p. 39). You should read, and carefully analyse, the case and respond to the issues presented in, and hidden behind, the case scenario within the context of a professionally developed report. You are required to support your arguments with appropriate theoretical discussion and references. To find out more about how to analyse a case study see
This assignment MUST be a properly constructed report. It MUST contain headings and sub-headings. The introduction should introduce the report, thesis statement (main objectives of the assignment) and include your argument. The main body of the assignment should present the evidence you have collected to support your arguments for the questions you are required to research. The conclusion section should restate your arguments, summarise the evidence and make a conclusion from all previous discussions. Find out more about writing a Business Report here
The assignment should contain a coherent, but necessarily restricted review of the academic literature on HRM topics in question. The literature review should be integrated into the assignment and not be a separate section. A reference list formatted in the prescribed APA style is compulsory.
This assessment item requires you to research the assigned topic to enhance your understanding of and utilisation of academic literature. Whilst you should AVOID using only the textbook for the course (Aguinis, 2013), it should be cited in regard to broad performance management principles. You will be expected to present information and evidence from, and cite, at least eight (8) relevant peer reviewed academic references (absolute minimum requirement). Although these may include other academic sources such as books on specific HRMT topics, chapters of edited books and so on, it is highly recommended that you use peer-reviewed journal articles. The quality and number of citations will demonstrate the breadth and depth of the literature used to support your arguments. Your marker is interested in the analysis that you developed from YOUR review of the literature and how well you use the literature to discuss the topic.
A good guide would be to use some recent references (ideally some of these would be journal articles from 2010-2015) in your discussions. The reference lists found in your prescribed textbook, as well as other texts, are good places to start when searching for relevant journal articles. Reliance on websites or textbooks only is NOT an appropriate academic literature search and will not help you to achieve higher marks and/or grades in this course.
What is required in this assessment is a critical evaluation of the academic literature as it relates to the specific details of the case study. Your marker is also interested in the recommendations for practice and conclusions that you reach by evaluating the literature and the case scenario.
Task:
Read the case study “Disrupted links in the performance management process at Omega, Inc.” (Aguinis, 2013, p. 55). Consider each of the links of the performance management process as shown in Figure 1 (Aguinis, 2013, p. 39):?
a. prerequisites – performance planning?
b. performance planning – performance execution
c. performance execution – performance assessment?
d. performance assessment – performance review?
e. performance review – performance renewal and recontracting
f. performance renewal and recontracting – prerequisites.
Imagine you are a HR executive at Omega Inc:
1. Analyse the performance management process in light of Figure 1 and evaluate the linkages in the performance management process.?
2. What alternative performance management processes would be suited to Omega Inc.??
3. What would you recommend management at Omega Inc. do to improve its current performance management process?
Your report should contain a response of approximately equivalent length to all of the critical thinking questions presented above. Your assignment must be written in Times New Roman, size 12, with 1.5 line spacing. You must follow all other formatting rules described in the guides mentioned above.
Assessment criteria:
A marking rubric is available on Moodle and your lecturer/tutor/course coordinator will discuss it with you before the assessment item is due. The five criteria that will be used to mark your report are:
• Ability to critically evaluate case study by comparing the organisational context to literature.?
• Demonstrate understanding of performance management processes, concepts and techniques.?
• Ability to problem solve to explain major reward practices and their implication in performance management.
• Appropriate use of the conventions of Report writing: structure, language, length and tone.?
• Appropriate use of the APA referencing system.
