Assignment: preparation of the review of the current research literature on one of the following topics.
Topic:
The development of new anti-viral drugs against HIV
OR
The development of a vaccine against HIV.
HIV= Human immune deficiency virus
You have to prepare a literature review of one of these topics not both,
But inform me within the next two days, which of them you have selected.
This assignment has two assessment tasks.
Assessment Task 1: Due date 14th march (further improvement may require):
Task description: To successfully complete your literature review you are required to access relevant and recent information from the scientific literature. Thus, it is essential for you to develop appropriate information literacy skills so you can strategically search the literature. Once you acquire appropriate information you also need to manage it appropriately and there are many bibliographic tools to assist this process. To prepare a literature review you must then read, understand and summarise clearly what you have learnt. In the first part of this assignment, your ability to access, retrieve and manage literature relevant to your topic will be assessed. You should meet with your Supervisor to discuss the topic of your literature review, identify relevant journal sources and determine a list of key words to assist you in searching the literature.
In the second part of this assignment you need to read, summarise and report on papers that you have read. Finally you will develop an outline of your literature review. Full details of this assignment are given at the end of this unit outline and in MyLO. Assessment criteria Managing information (40%): Evidence of a search plan and justification of sources is provided, EndNote library containing all references is provided and each reference in the EndNote library is annotated with appropriate additional information and attachments. A bibliography is presented in the Harvard style. Page 10 KLA483 Literature Review Summarising information (50%). The extent to which notes clearly summarise the contents of two papers in your own words. The accuracy of a written summary of one paper including analysis of its quality and importance. Review Outline (10%). Logical set of section headings that outline the scope of the review and include relevant references. Links to unit’s intended learning outcomes ILO1, ILO2, ILO4 Task length As required for report plus 1 page review outline plus EndNote library Date due 1500h (3pm) Friday March 18, submit through MyLO.

ASSESSMENT TASK 1: INFORMATION LITERACY. Task description To successfully complete your literature review you are required to access relevant and recent information from the scientific literature. Thus, it is essential for you to develop appropriate information literacy skills so you can strategically search the literature. Once you acquire appropriate information you also need to manage it appropriately and there are many bibliographic tools to assist this process. At the University of Tasmania Science Library you have access to a variety of databases for searching the published literature and free access to EndNote, a software tool for publishing and managing bibliographies, citations and references. Complete all parts of the assignment detailed below. 1. Managing Information (40%) a. Constructing a search (5%) Prior to undertaking your database searching, meet with your supervisor and record your answers to the following questions. • What is the title of your literature review? • What are the three (3) most relevant journal sources for your topic? • What are the key words that you will use to assist you in searching the literature? b. Creating a library (10%) • Choose a scholarly database to search and record the name of the database. • Conduct a search of that scholarly database and identify five (5) articles relevant to your topic (preferably including at least one review article). • Create an EndNote library and export the citations for those 5 articles. • Select one of the articles you retrieved and, using the same database, find the first ten (10) related articles to this reference. Export these Page 21 KLA483 Literature Review citations to your existing EndNote library. Record the details of the reference you used to find related articles. c. Creating and formatting a bibliography (10%) • For each reference in your EndNote library (n=15) you are required to demonstrate and record the accessibility of the journal article as follows. • If you are able to download a pdf file of the article using the Full Text@UTAS function, download and attach the file in the ‘File Attachments’ field for that reference in EndNote. In the ‘Label’ field record ‘article available through Full Text@UTAS’. • If you are able to access a print version of the article, in the ‘Label’ field in EndNote record ‘article available as hard copy in the library’. If possible photocopy the article, create a scanned copy and attach the file in the ‘File Attachments’ field for that reference. • If you are unable to access the article in either electronic or hard copy form, in the ‘Label’ field in EndNote record ‘request article through Document Delivery’. • Export the contents of your EndNote library into a Word document and create a bibliography using the Harvard style of referencing. d. Personal reflection (15%) • Write a short report (200 – 300 words) reflecting on how well you were able to access and manage the literature in this task. In your answer discuss whether you will continue to manage the literature using EndNote or whether you will use an alternative method. 2. Summarising information (50%) a) Taking notes (20%) For two papers that are important to your topic you must submit the notes you have made from these papers. This can take any form: a word document with your notes, a scanned copy of handwritten notes or annotated paper or an annotated PDF. The notes must be in your words, it is not enough to highlight relevant sections of the paper or write down selected quotes. Page 22 KLA483 Literature Review b) Writing a summary (30%) Choose one of the papers that you have taken notes for and write a summary (300 – 500 words) of the research presented in this paper. Explain the most important findings, any flaws in the study and why you think this work is important (or not). 3. Review outline (10%) The outline should show the proposed structure of your review (although it may change) with section headings. For most of the sections include one or two references that relate to that section. 4. Submission The MyLO dropbox for this assignment will allow the submission of multiple documents. Compile your answers to parts 1 (including the bibliography), 2b and 3 in a Word document and submit through the appropriate link on MyLO. Your notes for part 2a can be submitted separately in whatever form you have taken them in. For your EndNote library you will need to compress the library using the instructions provided in the Library EndNote guide.
Assessment Task 2: 1st april
Task description: You are required to prepare a document/review of the current research literature on a topic selected to complement your studies and/or Master of Applied Science discipline. Topic selection is in consultation with appropriate School of Agricultural Science staff. The objectives of a literature review are: To find the most important information relevant to the topic To identify it so that others can find it for themselves (i.e. unambiguous referencing) To objectively describe and summarise the main points/issues so that your reader doesn’t have to read all the references themselves (unless they want to) And to clearly, succinctly, and objectively communicate that summary to your reader. At the same time you should identify any contentious points, or facts/interpretations that are uncertain, so as to help them reach a balanced decision for themselves. Assessment criteria Relevance of information: The information presented must be accurate and pertinent to the topic which is covered in sufficient depth. (20%) Source of information: The sources of information appropriate should be (i.e. authoritative sources used) and identified correctly both in text and reference list. The reference list is in an acceptable style. There is no evidence of plagiarism. (20%) Critical analysis and synthesis: The author should be able to combine elements from multiple sources to make their point. Ideas should not be blindly accepted, but must be analysed and evaluated. (20%) Structure: The literature review goes from general ideas to specific conclusions. Transitions tie sections together. Introduction introduces Page 11 KLA483 Literature Review scope of review, conclusions are supported by information in body of review. (20%) Style: The review is written clearly and succinctly with spelling and grammar of a suitable standard, appropriate and consistent formatting and the review is 6000 – 10 000 words (20%) Links to unit’s intended learning outcomes ILO 1 - 5 Task length 6 000 – 10 000 words, excluding reference list. You must complete these tasks as described below and submit by the due date through the appropriate link in MyLO. They will not be graded but your supervisor will provide feedback to help guide you in writing your review.
Details of Assessment task 2:
First draft of literature review: The first draft should contain some information under most of the headings in your outline. The information should be referenced and you must include a reference list (at least 20 references should have been read by now).
Task length: The review should be between 5 and 10 pages (excluding references). Links to unit’s intended learning outcomes: 1, 2, 4. Date due: 1500h on April 1st. Submit through MyLO.
Second draft of literature review: In this draft you should have considered your supervisor’s suggestions for the structure of the review. This should be a complete draft with information under each of the section headings. The information should be referenced and you must include a reference list. Task length: The review should be between 10 and 20 pages (6000-10000 words) (excluding references).
