ASSESSMENT COVER SHEET
To obtain the qualification of BSBINM601A Manage knowledge and information, the skills and knowledge required are summed as;
Skills
? analytical skills to identify improvement opportunities in relation to the services/products delivered internally or concepts/ideas in area of expertise
? communication and consultation skills to ensure all relevant groups and individuals are advised of what is occurring and are provided with an opportunity for input

Assessment Part A. Case study. Obtain information
Performance objective
The candidate will demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to obtain information relevant to business issues.?
Specifications
You must provide:
? One report listing the document names as evidence that you have chosen an organisation and have obtained the background information on it.
Your assessor will be looking for:
? A short report including all information identified in the procedure
Assessment description
The candidate will identify an organisation which will be the subject of research. The candidate will undertake sufficient research to ensure all required background material is available and then write a brief report to confirm they meet the requirements.
Procedure
1. Choose an organisation, either an actual or a fictitious one, for which you have access to relevant documents.
2. Confirm that you have access to all of the following information in relation to that organisation:
• Strategic and business planning documents
• Job descriptions of key personnel
• Human Resource policy
• Human Resource procedures
• Business Performance data
• Complaints policy
• Staff and Customer feedback
3. List the above items and then the name of the file or other means of identification of the information.
4. Address the following points to ensure you have all the necessary background information:
• Review the information you have gathered
• Identify, define and analyse the business problems and issues
• Identify what information you will require to provide to the CEO and Board of Directors to allow them to make a decision on your recommendations
• Investigate the information you have gathered. How do know that the information you are gathering is reliable?
• Check the information and ensure that the information you select to use is not contradictory or ambiguous.
• How will you obtain anecdotal and other information not held in formal networks of the organisation?

Assessment Part B. . Analyse information and knowledge
Performance objective
The candidate will demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to analyse information and knowledge.
Specifications
You must present written responses to each of the questions listed in Procedure.
Your assessor will be looking for evidence of:
• knowledge of new technologies and their suitability to knowledge and information management
• analytical skills to identify improvement opportunities in relation to the services/products delivered internally or concepts/ideas in area of expertise
Assessment description
Using the scenario information you have chosen, the candidate will undertake a detailed analysis to identify relevant information and knowledge.
Procedure
1. Review the information you collected in Assessment part A.
2. Consider all of the following questions prior to writing any responses. The questions are:
? What are your objectives in conducting your analysis of the information gathered?
? Describe the patterns or trends emerging? Why do you think these are occurring and what has been the result?
? If appropriate, use statistical analysis to assist in your interpretation.
? Have you conducted a “What if Analysis’ on the information? What was the outcome?
? How have you ensured that your analysis has been conducted using a logical approach to the evaluation and conclusions drawn by you.
? How would you adjust any information collection systems currently in place?
3. Provide a written response to each question.
Assessment Part C. . Decisions on business issues
Performance objective
The candidate will demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to take decisions on business issues identified.
Specifications
You must present written responses to each of the questions listed in Procedure.
Your assessor will be looking for evidence of:
? knowledge of new technologies and their suitability to knowledge and information management
? risk management
? quantitative and qualitative research skills to locate and review relevant data and information
? technology skills to consider various software and hardware options for storing and accessing data and information.
Assessment description
Using the scenario information you have chosen, the candidate will conduct an implementation review. The candidate will then consult with a union representative and General Manager to receive input and develop a revised communication plan. The candidate will action the revised plan by delivering a 15–20 minute information session to employees. Finally, the candidate will consider making final revisions to the communications plan and overall project plan and seek approval from the General Manager.
Procedure
1. Review the information you collected in Assessment part A.
2. Consider all of the following questions prior to writing any responses. The questions are:
? Do you have enough information to make valid, credible and reliable recommendations to the CEO and Board of Directors? How do you know that you have sufficient information and that it is valid and reliable? Document your recommendations – one must include the use of an information system to capture future information relevant to this project.
? What risk management plans have you put in place to determine acceptable courses of action?
? What quantitative methods did you use to assist your decision-making?
? With whom would you consult when making decisions about information to use?
? How have you ensured that any decisions taken on information use are within the appropriate authority of the decision maker?
? Explain how your recommendations are in line with the organisational objectives, values and standards of the organisation you have researched?
3. Provide a written response to each question.
Assessment Part D . Communication
Performance objective
The candidate will demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to disseminate information to the organisation.

You must submit a report in the appropriate format (written report, presentation, workshop etc).
Your assessor will be looking to
• Ensure advice/information needs are documented and are specific to location, format and time line requirements
• Check that document information and update databases regularly
• Check that the design and test systems meet information requirements of decision makers
• Ensure information is up-to-date, accurate, relevant and sufficient for the recipient
• Develop communication plans and disseminate information
• Adhere to confidentiality/privacy policies in the transmission/release of information/advice
• Review and update communication plans regularly
• Utilise technology which provides optimum efficiency and quality
• Maintain corporate knowledge and ensure security
Assessment description
Using the scenario information supplied, the candidate will describe the current status of the organisation’s information and knowledge systems and recommendations for changes.
Procedure
1. Review the information you collected in Assessment part A. 2. Consider all of the following issues as part of compiling your report. The issues are:
? Detail how you will update information to the CEO and Board of Directors, if there are changes before the decision is made.
? Check your report a final time before submission to ensure the information is up-to-date, accurate, relevant and sufficient. Make changes as necessary.
? How would you recommend, if asked by the CEO and Board of Directors, that information on this decision be communicated to stakeholders?
? How would you recommend, if asked by the CEO and Board of Directors, how this form of communication of information to the stakeholders will maintain the confidentiality and be unavailable to the organisation’s competitors?
? How would you recommend, if asked by the CEO and Board of Directors, that information be reviewed and updated regularly?
? How would you recommend, if asked by the CEO and Board of Directors, that technology be used to provide the utmost efficiency and quality?
? How would you recommend, if asked by the CEO and Board of Directors, that corporate knowledge be protected and held securely?
