Identified learning areas as per national safety and quality health service standards Area of focus Activities of learning – at least 3 activities needed Reflection on activity and specification to PEP practice
Preventing and Controlling Healthcare Associated Infections – standards 3 (example) Hand Hygiene: need to understand the importance and how to correctly perform hand hygiene
1 – need to read standard 3 (ACSQHC 2011)
2 – understand and use the 5 moments of hand hygiene by revising my online learning package as part of PEP preparation – (www.hha.org.au)
3 - understand the differences between the various levels of transmission and PPE (Lee & Bishop, 2013)
1- After reading the ACSQHC (2001) standard 3 I realised there was more to preventing infections than just hand hygiene and that it is a part of a larger process including monitoring, research, evaluation and improvement We can get audited to see how often we wash our hands and which method we use so I need to make sure I know when to use gel and when to use soap and water.
2- I need to use the 5 moments in workshops as well as on PEP as then I will do it automatically which will make me and my patients safer
3- Hand hygiene is a part of PPE and sometimes I can forget that contact precautions mean also covering my forearms and body especially when I need to be close to my patients to help reposition or walk them. If I don’t understand the route of transmission I could risk sharing the micro-organism between other patients and other staff.
Patient Identification and Procedure Matching – standard 5
Recognising and Responding to Clinical Deterioration in Acute Health Care – standard 9
Preventing Falls and Harm from Falls – standard 10
