TASK
Part A) Plan and implement an interest-based emergent literacy project with a small group of children.
The project will take place over a period of time and will include the following steps:
1. Reflect on the interests of the group of children.
2. Select an appropriate storybook based on these interests. Read the book with the children(this is Experience 1). Consider how you will present and read the story to draw the children’s attention to concepts of literacy.
3. Consider the themes of the storybook and then plan and implement two follow-up playbased learning experiences based on those themes (these are Experiences 2 and 3).
? The experiences will develop the children’s language and literacy whilst allowing them to learn more about their topic of interest.
? The experiences will introduce opportunities for talk, new vocabulary and print materials to encourage emergent literacy (oral, visual and written) understandings in the children.
? Your experiences will consider early childhood pedagogical practices.
? Be mindful of the role you will play in extending the children’s literacy during implementation of the experiences.
4. Carry out and document the project with a range of methods that may include:
observations, reflections, photos, learning stories, children's voices, children's drawing and writing work.
Part B) Prepare and submit a report
Structure your report using the following 4 headings:
Overview (approx. 250 words)
Introduce your project. Discuss your understanding of emergent literacy, how your project incorporated opportunities to enhance the children’s language and literacy and why the theme/topic of the project was appropriate for this group of children.
The Learning Experiences (approx. 1200 words overall) Describe and discuss each learning experience.
Experience 1: The storybook
Experience 2: Play-based experience that supports children's emerging literacy.
Experience 3: Play-based experience that supports children's emerging literacy.
Each experience must include a rationale for inclusion in the project, the literacy concepts you are aiming to achieve and your role in supporting and extending children's literacy.
Your discussion will include reference to relevant, current literature and will be linked to your documentation.
Conclusion (approx. 250 words)
Conclude your report with an evaluation and reflection on your project. Describe what worked well and what you would change. Include a reflection on your capacity to extend children’s emergent literacy and how your practice may change in the future.
Appendix-Documentation (not included in the word count)
Document the project including the children’s interests that inspired the story book choice as the starting point for your project. Additionally you can include observations, reflections, photos, learning stories, children's voices, children's drawings and writing samples. You will also note the children’s responses which indicate how the project might contribute to their emergent literacy. Include the most relevant pieces of documentation that relate to your report.
RATIONALE
This assessment task will assess the following learning outcome/s:
• be able to identify environments that enhance children's language and literacy development.
• understand the key role adults can play in enhancing or impeding children's language and literacy development.
• demonstrate knowledge of and ability to plan for emergent literacy in children.
• understand and be able to explain teaching strategies which assist the development of children's talk, thinking and emergent literacy.
• demonstrate awareness of promoting children's language and literacy through using a range of play-based learning experiences (e.g. dramatic play, music and movement).
This assignment develops your understandings of the readings and set text by applying and adapting the ideas to your own work with children. In particular, the assignment requires you to demonstrate your understanding of programming provisions based on children's interests and focused on the development of children's language and literacy.
