Assignment Title:
Performance Management in a Dublin Hotel
The Strathmore Hotel Dublin is part of the US owned five-star international hotel Group called Strathmore Hotels Worldwide. The hotel in Dublin has 230 rooms, two restaurants, a cocktail bar, a conference centre which can facilitate up to 500 for meeting or banqueting events and a luxury spa. The hotel has 220 full-time employees and 30 part-time staff.
Approximately 180 of the staff work in operations to include Food and Beverage Outlets, Front Office and Housekeeping. An additional 20 employees work in office and clerical roles to include Sales; Finance; Human Resources and Administration. The hotel has one General Manager, with 4 senior managers and 6 Heads of Department.
The Human Resources Manager has been newly appointed and comes to the Strathmore with excellent experience of working in another Irish owned five-star hotel just outside Dublin.
The hotel has just reopened after Covid-19 but, despite the forced closure during lockdown, most of the full-time staff were kept on with the help of government subsidies although several staff including 3 heads of departments resigned to go and work in other sectors such as retail and hi-tech. So, a new recruitment campaign is also underway to fill these vacant positions.
The management team are now keen to ensure that both existing staff and new recruits into the hotel will rise to the standards expected as the luxury hotel market in Dublin is very competitive. They wish to take steps to ensure a highly motivated team is in place and to encourage high standards of productivity and service quality.
The Strathmore Hotels Worldwide group leaves the function of performance management to each individual hotel due to cultural variations and local differences in motivating factors. However, they do require a system to be in place which they monitor. As a result, to date performance management in the Dublin property has mainly been a ‘box ticking’ exercise which is often frustrating for both management and staff.
The new HR manager with the support of the entire management team wishes to introduce a new more progressive performance management system to help the hotel meet its needs and she is looking for some advice on how to go about this task.
