Task
There are TEN questions in this assignment. There is 100 marks in total.
Study carefully the following network topology. It is required that the small business Smart Office Services Pty Ltd have its Central office (HQ) and two branch offices (BRANCH1 and BRANCH2) linked via serial leased lines using routers.
You will be assigned a SINGLE IP to configure this network.
You need to e-mail your lecturer to request an IP address. You need to reply with a confirmation e-mail once you have received your allocated IP address.
Examine the network requirements and answer the following ten questions. Keep in mind that IP addresses will be needed for each of the LAN interfaces.
Question 1. How many subnets are needed in the topology? (2 Marks)
Question 2. VLSM must be used in the MOST efficient way to subnet the given IP address. Create a table to list the information auch as Router Interfaces/ IP Address(Highest)/ IP Address(Lowest)/ Subnet Mask/ Default Gateway) ( Please show the working) (38 marks) Note: The LOWEST IP
addresses of each subnet should be given to the PCs. The HIGHEST IP addresses of each subnet are given as the default gateway.
Question 3. Cabling is an important part of the design. What is the cable type selected between two routers. Explain the reason. (3 marks)
Question 4. In the most common situation, the clock being generated by ISP. From the clock signal viewpoint, how are both ends of a serial link called? (2 marks)
Question 5. Set up the required network in packet tracer software. Select one router in the topology, type “show version “command in CLI interface. What is the version number of IOS? What are the sizes of ROM, RAM, Flash and NVRAM? (5 marks)
Question 6. Configure the three (3) routers: (22 marks)
- Naming the routers and labelling them as HQ, BEANCH1 and BRANCH2. ( 3 marks)
- Setting the secret password as ‘class’ on all routers. ( 3 marks)
- Configuring interfaces/PCs. (10 marks)
- Configuring TELNET on the HQ router with a password of ‘xyz123’ and (a suitable) MOTD. ( 4 marks)
- Saving changes on a router. (2 marks)
- Verifying basic configuration and router operations.
Question 7. Configure necessary static routes on three routers to make the successful connection between routers. (6 marks)
Question 8. Ping from PC6 in LAN 6 to PC4 in LAN4 (Checked in Packet Tracer file). Record the information flow in EVENT LIST of simulation and explain the PDU information such as TYPE and involved layers in each stage. (8 marks).
Question 9. What protocol is used by PING? What are the names of two PING messages? (6 marks) Question 10. What is the definition of network convergence? How can you identify that your configured network has reached convergence? (6 marks )
Note: 2 marks are given for the appropriate referencing and citation.
Rationale
The aim of this assignment is to evaluate your capabilities to:
- design a subnet plan for a small company network including several routers and subnets;
- discuss routing problems that can occur in complex networks;
- correctly identify and discuss the functionality and limitations of different devices used in computernetworks;
- evaluate network performance;
- perform basic router configuration of security passwords and interfaces; - configure simple routing.
Marking criteria
Marks will be generally awarded based on the following criteria:
- full marks will be awarded for high accuracy, with an advanced level of depth, original thought andunderstanding with use of diagrams and good presentation;
- satisfactory answers will score up to 75% of the marks allocated to a question;
- deductions will be made for major omissions, errors and over use of quotes;
- correct in-text referencing and reference list according to the APA standard. Poor referencing willresult in deductions to individual question and total assignment marks;
- list the steps to show your working;
- correct IP addresses, network addresses and subnet masks used in configuring networks; - correct use of configuration commands and associated parameters; - appropriate testing and results.
