1. Discuss the key sustainability issues prevalent in the garment industry. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the challenges faced in implementation of sustainable initiatives. (7 Marks)Firstly, start with an academic definition, highlighting varying perspectives on the topic. Then use the case as a point of reference, highlighting the issues reported (e.g. human rights violation – child labour, gender inequality, minimum wage, working conditions etc.). Mention any government legislation or global initiatives that has been put in place to address it. Basically, highlight the current state of the garment industry in Bangladesh today. Your objective is to have and maintain a critical discussion.
Many articles, both academic and non-academic can assist here. While the epicenter of the discussion remains with the case, one must not ignore the challenges faced in sustainability implementation elsewhere. At this juncture, students should discuss the challenges of implementation of these initiatives in the in the garment industry. Critically discuss the complexities of the challenges (such as political agenda, corruption, stage of economic growth, absolute poverty)and the key areas that need immediate attention.

You should align the issues of the case with these goals and establish arguments on how the policy of the UN can address them or avoid the same from happening. In other words, explain how an issue like inequality can help bring about equal rights for women in these factories or impact their livelihood. Got it ?
A critical thinking approach might explore giving examples where the UN has been successful in applying this policy within the garment industry, particularly where we saw exploitation of women’s’ rights etc.Inequalities in wages, working conditions and quality of life can also be discussed.
Responsible production – Discuss responsibility from the business’s perspectives. What are the current issues in production and what strategies have/can be implemented?
