Recent Question/Assignment
P1: Activity 1: Knowledge Evidence
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
Please answer the following questions on carbon emissions.
Q1. Describe in your own words the term “carbon footprint”.
Q2. Research and describe three (3) possible causes of carbon emissions in a business.
Q3. Identify and describe the most important legislation, related to Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) emissions in Australia (i.e. Act and Regulation).
Q4. Provide an example of a policy and/or procedure related to carbon management. Explain your answer in 50-150 words.
P1: Activity 2: Legislative requirements
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
Let’s create a spreadsheet to increase our knowledge on legal requirements in Australia. Use the template provided and insert information about the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme and one relevant state or federal legislation of your choice. Follow the instructions below.
• Open the template provided
• Select the first row and choose Sort & Filter Filter.
• Read the instructions available on the second row.
• Insert information from your research.
Save the file as Legislation_your_name and submit for grading.
P1: Activity 3: Establish carbon footprint
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
Please read the case study Virgin Australia and answer the following task.
TASK 1: Identify four (4) sources of greenhouse gases emissions in this business. Identify the scope of the emissions (Scope 1, Scope 2 or Scope 3). You can make assumptions if you would like to explain other possible emissions.
P1: Activity 4: Establish carbon footprint
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
Please read the case study and answer the following tasks.
Case study: Safetravels is a small travel agency operating in New South Wales. They would like to reduce their carbon emissions and thought that a plan could assist them in achieving this goal.
You are hired as a consultant to calculate and propose a plan to reduce the emissions from the business. The agency provided you with the following information:
- The electricity used comes from the grid
- Incandescent light bulbs are used for lighting
- They own 2 diesel vehicles
- There is a fireplace that employees enjoy using during winter nights (July-August)
- The water is heated with LPG
TASK 1: You will calculate the amount of CO2 equivalent from each source for one year. Use information available in the learning material, and table below. Observe if the measurement units are correct.
Source Amount per month
Electricity 1500 kWh
Dry wood (Jun-Jul) 300 Kg
Diesel oil 300 L
Liquefied petroleum gas 100 L
Prepare an Excel spreadsheet to calculate the emissions. Use the energy content and emission factors from the table below and apply the formula available on page 82 and 145 of the NGER Technical Guidelines.
Fuel combusted Energy content factor
GJ/t Emission factor kg CO2-e/GJ
(RELEVANT OXIDATION FACTORS INCORPORATED)
CO2 CH4 N2O
Dry wood 16.2 0.0 0.10 1.2
Diesel oil 38.6 69.9 0.1 0.5
Liquefied petroleum gas 25.7 60.2 0.2 0.2
For emissions linked to electricity purchased from the grid, you are going to use the formula (page 523) and state emission factor (page 524) provided by the NGER Technical Guidelines. Remember: the travel agency is located in New South Wales.
TASK 2. Research on the internet and in your learning material and propose at least 3 (three) practices that will help the business with reducing their carbon emissions. Please answer Task 2 in your spreadsheet.
Save the spreadsheet as Carbon_footprint_your_name and submit for grading.
P1: Home Project: Plan carbon emissions reduction
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
Please answer the following tasks on carbon emissions.
When implementing any sustainability improvement, one of the most important tasks it to inform the staff about the subject. Information should be clear, concise and accessible.
One possibility is to have a monthly newsletter about the sustainability plans for your business.
TASK 1: You are going to prepare a newsletter as part of your implementation plan to inform the staff of the travel agency about carbon emissions. This newsletter should have at least 2 pages with relevant images, and information about the following subjects:
- The problem of carbon emissions
- The emissions associated with this business
- Ideas to reduce greenhouse gases emissions in the business
- Implementation plan (schedule)
- Initial outcomes (you can use information from previous calculations) and next steps of the plan implementation
You may use the template provided or choose another template (e.g. New newsletter template in MS Word). Remember to include the information above.
Save the file as Newsletter_your_name and submit for grading.
TASK 2: You will role play with a classmate or a friend using the information from your newsletter.
The guidelines are the following:
- Communicate the topics from the newsletter in a staff meeting
- Ask for suggestions that team members may have
- One participant (your classmate or friend) will engage in the discussion and offer an idea to reduce the carbon emissions
- Upload an audio file to this activity that is between 3-4 minutes
Save it as Oral_communication_your_name and submit for grading.
