2.0 Learning Outcomes
This assignment allows you to demonstrate progress towards achieving the following unit learning outcomes:
At the completion of this Unit, you will be able to:
ULO 3 Describe the importance of delivering business value to clients via engineering leadership, and appreciate how this is achieved.
ULO 5 Explain the challenges of managing complexity and uncertainty in engineering leadership.
ULO 6 Demonstrate knowledge of engineering leadership skills.
This assignment will also help you demonstrate learning achievements towards other unit learning outcomes. We encourage you to review those to discover additional learning opportunities that will enhance the quality of your submission and final results.

This assignment represents 25% of the total grade for this unit.
4.0 Assignment question
In 2008, the world faced a financial crisis that later became known as the ‘GFC’ – Global Financial Crisis. It led to the collapse of multi-billion dollars banks, industries, companies, etc. However, some engineering businesses (from large to small firms) managed to survive the GFC by having good leaders/leadership teams. You need to write a research paper by examining one such engineering/technology leader from any country around the world, utilizing the key fundamentals of engineering leadership knowledge. You need to present a critical review that best assess the success of that leader by discussing as many leadership skills/traits, leadership styles, and type of innovation leadership approach as possible, that you think was adopted by that leader. There is no need to discuss the process, or procedures etc.., rather the focus would be on traits and basic skills that they demonstrated. You need to justify your analysis by examining practical situations faced by the leader while describing the traits/styles/innovation approach. Based on your analysis, make logical conclusions by suggesting traits, styles and innovation approach, which might be helpful for other engineers.
Please note: This is not a biography.
Note: Please use the IEEE double-column paper format.

5.0 Submission Requirements
The following are submission requirements for all student.
• The total page limit for each submission should not be more than 1500 words (~3 single-space pages) (excluding assignment cover sheet, images, tables and Appendix).
• Read the assessment criteria for guidance on how this assignment will be marked. Make sure that any analysis you present is your own – not simply a summary of what is presented in source or reference materials.
• The submitted file format must be .pdf file and make sure your submission is made within the respective folder.
• Don’t waste time with fancy layouts, colours, cover pages, and so on. A simple text-based format is all that is needed with the report layout consisting of a few sections of text (with section headings). Use photos or diagrams sparingly and only if necessary and/or relevant to include in your report. Just use a basic and common text font such as Arial or Times New Roman with at least 10-point font size for body text. Single-spaced paragraphs are acceptable.
• There must be a reference section (bibliography) in your submission. 10% marks will be deducted if it is omitted, not suitably formatted, or lacking relevant citations. Use a suitable and same referencing style such as the IEEE or Harvard Style or similar (IEEE is preferred) for all references.
• Don’t plagiarise or cheat. If you are unsure what constitutes plagiarism, cheating, or collusion then refer to the Academic Honesty information provided for all units on DSO in the Unit Guide and Information folder.
• Online and in-person resources and materials are available from Student Life for all students to assist with assignment writing and referencing skills. Student Life also provides online and in-person resources to assist with understanding plagiarism and how to avoid producing it in your academic work.
• Student Academic and Peer Support Services can provide assistance. Please check the library news feed on the unit website about the locations and extra times of this service. This is a free professional service.
6.0 Submission Deadline
You must upload your Assignment Submission on CloudDeakin under the Assignment 1 Dropbox link by Friday 2 August 2019, 11:59 pm.
