Part 1: Please read the Following.
Managers must be aware of power abuse and make every effort to ensure a fair and equal workplace. Whether in hiring, training or promotion, all policies, by Canadian law, cannot be unfair or treat diverse peoples unequally.
Subtle relationship abuse that shows disrespect is a major concern. Watch this clip from Undercover Boss, and the CEO of Hooters Restaurants, Colby Brooks. Brooks is playing a trainee named Scottie and has been assigned to work at Jim Bo's Hooters restaurant. Jim Bo abuses his power and is abusive towards his employees. Using your emotional intelligence, look for the nonverbal cues the girls give that they are not 'committed' to the activity, but are only complying. (Continuum of Responses to Power, page 280.) What nonverbal message is a person trying to convey when they place their hand in front of their mouth as they listen?
Later, Brooks talks to Jim Bo about the incident. At first Jim Bo refuses to accept the comments; on the Continuum of Responses to Power, Jim Bo is not accepting any of the CEO's bases of power. He is resisting power.
What power does Brooks use that gets Jim Bo to finally commit to creating a more respectful workplace?
