Information regarding Study Period 4 Assessments
This study period will be completed once you have successfully completed written assessments within 22155/01 and 22155/02.
It is strongly suggested that you attempt Assessment 22155/01 first and then wait for feedback from your assessor before attempting 22155/02.
Written assessments in 22155/01 include:
Part A: Extended Answer questions (7 questions all of equal weighting). Each question requires you to answer one or more parts to the question. You should aim to write approximately 600-800 words in total for each question.
Part B: Case Study 1 Challenging Behaviours
This case study has 6 parts. You will need to answer each part, providing examples wherever possible. You should aim to write approximately 1000 words in total for this case study.
Part C: Case Study 2 Case Management Special Needs
This case study has 2 parts. You will need to answer each part, providing examples wherever possible. You should aim to write approximately 400 words in total for this case study.

STUDY PERIOD 4 INFLUENCING BEHAVIOUR
WRITTEN ASSESSMENTS 22155/01
Objectives
To successfully complete this assessment task you must demonstrate that you can:
- respond effectively to challenging behaviour in particular incidents
- respond to unacceptable behaviour and support the responsibility for behaviour management and change
- participate in carrying out specific activities in a case/care plan
- identify client information needs and provide appropriate information
- outline the requirements to plan, prepare and implement group activities to meet individual client outcomes.
Part A: Extended Answer Questions
Instructions:
There are seven questions, each with a number of parts, for you to answer. Each part of every question is important. Read the questions carefully and be sure to answer all parts of each question. Each question targets a range of situations that you must successfully answer in order to demonstrate competency within this assessment task. You will need to do some additional research to answer some of these questions successfully. Reference your resources.
Questions:
1. An Aboriginal client with a history of suicide attempts has demonstrated aggressive behaviour towards you during a treatment session, grabbing your forearm and yelling at you. The client’s partner is present. Answer the following questions in regards to this scenario:

a) What verbal and physical responses/strategies should you use? Include communication, defusing and negotiation strategies that you would try and what you would do if the client did not calm down.
b) What communication, negotiation and relationship-building strategies could you implement after the incident (once the client has stopped being aggressive)?
c) How would you maintain the safety of self, others and security equipment?
d) What are the reporting requirements. List 4 referral services and sources of information that you would research. Discuss the access and equity issues that are present in some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
e) What strategies should be listed in the organisational policies and procedures would be relevant in this situation to facilitate a resolution?

2. You are working with three clients of similar ability, background and communication skills in a group session under indirect supervision. The clients are receiving therapy from your supervisor and your supervisor has given you instructions to conduct weekly group sessions. Answer the following questions.

a) How will plan for, and assist with the development of the group sessions for these three clients, each with individual client goals and outcomes?
b) How will the principles of group dynamics and the nature of group learning affect your conduct of these sessions?
c) What specific information would you need to give to each client in regards to the program, before they start?
d) How will assess and manage behaviour to promote a positive outcome, avoid conflict, and promote cooperation, dignity and self-esteem of all clients?
e) What are the major work health and safety issues that are likely to be in organizational policies and procedures in regards to conducting group sessions and any potentially challenging behaviour?
f) What supervisory, documenting and reporting protocols will you need to follow?
g) What are the contingencies that you would implement if one of the three clients suddenly fell over?
h) What are your requirements for effective conducting of the group sessions?
i) What non-verbal cues would possibly indicate that a client is not coping with an activity? List at least five answers and explain.

3. Your supervisor has referred a culturally and linguistically diverse client to another allied health professional for additional treatments. Your supervisor has asked you to provide the client with the prepared information in regards to this referral. Outline:
a) the major points that you would communicate to the client
b) communication considerations, e.g. how you will communicate
c) any actions that you will need to take
d) your responsibilities with this task.

4. List a set of strategies that you could implement to deal with clients who are prone to confusion or other cognitive impairment. Provide two examples of when specialist advice and family involvement may be required. Include a rationale for all your responses.

5. Your supervisor has asked you to conduct a group session (that he/she has developed) for ten people with different abilities and individual client outcomes. Assume the session is 60 minutes in length.

a) What steps would you need to take to plan the timing of group session?
b) Provide a sample of how you would use your time and the clients’ time over the 60 minutes, using correct grammar, equipment terminology and punctuation.
c) How would you ensure effective use of available resources?
d) How would you ensure an effective prioritisation of workload?
e) How would you establish a positive and effective rapport and relationship with each client?
f) What are your responsibilities for the cleaning and storing of equipment and materials for sessions?
g) How would you evaluate your work?

6. Research and outline the potential indicators for the physical and emotional abuse of a minor and the intervention strategies that you would take if you suspected a child in your care was being abused.

7. Provide an example of a real conflict situation in your workplace (any workplace) whereby culture has affected your communication techniques. Explain how you accommodated for the cultural values, behaviours and practices of the other person. Note: You may create the scenario if a real experience has not occurred to you.

Part B: Case study 1 - Challenging Behaviours (1000 words)
Instructions:
You will need to do some additional research to answer some of these questions successfully. Reference your resources.
Peter, a 36-year-old male client who you suspect is under the influence of alcohol, is slurring his speech and is slightly unsteady on his feet. He is being rude to staff and other clients.
Outline how you would respond to Peter’s unacceptable behaviour. In particular explain your responsibilities and actions in regards to:
a) evaluating how you deal with this situation and the behaviour of the client in formal and informal settings
b) duty of care and limits of role
c) personal safety and the safety of others
d) your communication, manner, empathy, diffusion and negotiation techniques and strategies
e) the questions you would ask the client (provide at least 3 examples), providing a rationale for your answer.
f) reporting, reviewing and debriefing of this incident.

Baxter, a 12-year-old-boy with muscular dystrophy who cannot walk and is confined to a wheelchair for transport. His parents are divorced and only his mother is in attendance.
With consideration to his age and impairments, explain your responsibilities and actions in regards to:
a) providing for client needs and monitoring his progress on a regular basis, including involvement of the client, relevant family and other staff.
b) Promoting the client’s development.
