Conceptual Design Assignment
Due: Friday 28th April 4:00 PM
Weighting: 15% of Subject Assessment
Submit your assignment to: Mechanical Engineering Discipline Office - Level 4 of Building ES.
Background
Hardware stores offer delivery services for larger items that many people find difficult to get back to their homes. These services can be quite expensive and will typically have a waiting list for when the delivery will be made. An alternate solution that some hardware stores offer is to loan box trailers (see Fig. 1) to assist customers in getting their purchased goods home. While this service assists many people, the problem of unloading the goods safely is still a potential issue.
Figure 1: Typical box trailer.
Task
You have been commissioned by a local engineering consulting company to design a system to assist customers unloading goods from a box trailer supplied by a local hardware store. The internal tray size of the supplied tailer is 1800 mm long, 1200 mm wide and 400 mm high. Your solution must be versatile enough to transport a range of different goods, including: a standard sheet of formply (2400 mm long, 1200 mm wide and 17 mm thick) (see Fig. 2), 20 kg bags of cement (see Fig. 3), barbeque/outdoor furniture boxes and bulk commodities (see Fig. 4).
The equipment must:
1. Enable a customer to unload the trailer independently, and
2. Deliver the goods to level ground safely.

Figure 4: Typical bulk commodity.
This assignment requires you to provide a report in which you need to:
1. Formulate the problem to be solved.
2. Provide an engineering analysis of the problem.
3. Search for possible solutions, providing a brief description and a sketch of at least four solutions. Come up with at least two solutions of your own.
4. Decide (using the formal process outlined in lectures) which one is best suited and explain its operation in detail.
5. Provide a detailed description of the final solution, including materials and a Creo model (with some renders) showing its mode of operation.
6. Provide a risk assessment for the operation of the final design.
Note: You may make reasonable assumptions regarding the problem to complete your task.
