HNN320 Leadership and Clinical Governance
Assessment Task Two
2500 Words - 60% of the total grade
Purpose of assessment task 2
The purpose of this assessment task is to provide you with the opportunity to reflect on and demonstrate knowledge of the Registered Nurse’s role in leadership, clinical risk management, clinical governance, quality improvement and change management.
Assignment question:
Part One (2000 words):
Nurses play a significant role in delivering quality and safe patient care. Critically examine three (3) episodes of care outlined in the case study (available from the Cloud Deakin site). Drawing on contemporary resources, discuss the relevant factors associated with the episodes of care. Outline recommendations, supported by evidence, to improve the patient outcomes.
Please note: Students should avoid resorting to the ‘blame and shame’ of individuals or organisations within the case study. Rather, factors leading to the outcomes for the patient should be critiqued.
Part Two (500 words):
Using the reflections entered into your ePortfolio, critically reflect over your learning both in the course and the unit (HNN320). Write a 500 word professional reflection that identifies key points of learning from your studies, as well as areas in which you believe you need further development.

Student instructions for assessment task
To be successful with this assessment task you are strongly advised to:
• Identify relevant literature and other sources of evidence to explain the importance of the RN’s role in leadership, clinical risk management, clinical governance, and quality improvement and change management. References should mainly include refereed journal articles and ideally be no more than eight years old. The suggested readings in the unit are a good place to start. Additional resources may include governing body websites. References to consumer websites and/or Wikipedia are not appropriate for this assessment task.
• Critically analyse the case study information that is presented in week 9 (Topic 7).
You should refer directly to aspects of the case study to illustrate your arguments.
• Draw upon relevant ULOs, cloud concepts and content covered in this unit to guide you to additional resources.
• Self-assess your assignment against the marking rubric before submission. This will enable you to make sure that all the required elements have been covered.
• Part Two requires a critical reflection on your experiences in the course and unit. It is highly recommended that you are making regular entries in your ePortfolio throughout the course and the unit. Regular entries will provide a richer source of information to draw upon and aid in achieving the best possible mark for that section.
• To guide your reflection (Part TWO) you are strongly advised to use a reflective framework such as Rolfe, Freshwater and Jasper’s (2001) framework to guide your reflection. The framework consists of the following questions: o What? o So what? o Now what?
Reference: (Rolfe, G., Freshwater, D., & Jasper, M., (2001). Critical Reflection for Nursing and the Helping Professions: a user’s guide. London: Palgrave Macmillan.)
• Your reflection is to be written in the first person.

Structure:
Must contain a purposeful introduction that outlines some general background to the topic, an aim and purpose and themes for discussion. The body of the assignment will constitute about 80% of the word limit and provide key arguments supported by literature. The body of the assignment is normally organised in paragraphs of approximately 150 words with each paragraph focused on explanation of one idea. There should be a logical progression of ideas as demonstrated by logically linked arguments/discussion made in each paragraph. Each paragraph should commence with a topic sentence and end with a link to the next paragraph, and show a logical progression of ideas/argument. The conclusion paragraph should provide a summation of ideas, draw together the discussion, present no new material (references are not expected in the conclusion paragraph) and offer your position drawn from the discussion.
Communicate using academic writing:
Adheres to conventions of written English eg. word choice, professional language, grammar, use of appropriate sentence structure, punctuation and spelling.
Use of direct quotations: unless really necessary, most assignments do not require the use of direct quotes. Instead, re-expression of author arguments into your own words is required. If a direct quotation is used, you must explain how it adds to the discussion.
