The individual assignment is an individually attempted 1500 word assessment item requiring students to engage with material presented in lectures, explored in tutorials and researched in academic journal articles, in relation to the contemporary organisation. The individual assignment must be constructed using the Mendeley research aggregation software and evidence of competence with its use must be present. The student should include screenshots of their Mendeley Library as an appendix to their assignment. Students should, using the following topic construct a paper describing how contemporary organisations are using the theories and knowledge discussed in tutorials, presented in lectures and identified in their own scholarly research: 1) Select two case studies from those attempted in tutorials this semester. 2) With reference to at least 15 academic and peer reviewed journal articles provide an essay response to the following topic: “With reference to at least 15 academic journals explain the following concepts external environmental analysis, a Five Forces analysis and sources of sustainable competitive advantage. Then conduct an external environmental analysis, a Five Forces analysis, and determine the four sources of competitive advantage possessed by the firms in the case studies you have chosen.” This item must be referenced using the Mendeley software and conform to La Trobe essay writing and style guidelines. Submission Details There will be no hard-copy submission of internal assessment items for MGT3SMG this semester, and unless specified otherwise by the Instance Coordinator all submissions will be electronic and via the LMS. 1) Students will submit their essays via the Turn-It-In link clearly identified on the subject LMS. 2) Students MUST SUBMIT TO THIS LOCATIONS FOR THEIR ASSIGNMENT TO BE ACCEPTED AND ASSESSED. Further information for the assignment will be given in lectures and tutorials. 1) A template will be provided and must be used for this assignment. 2) A coversheet must to be completed when submitting your assignment online. 3) Assignments must show readings from other sources. 4) Students must acknowledge the source of all articles and do so using the Harvard system. a. Refer to: http://www.latrobe.edu.au/learning/referencing.html for tips on acknowledgement, referencing and plagiarism. b. You must reference any material you use which is not your own. c. You should also refer to the Faculty’s Student Study Guide (available from the Faculty Office). The La Trobe University online journals (see: http://www.lib.latrobe.edu.au/) are a necessary resource. 5) Should another student’s work be copied, penalties will apply under University Academic Misconduct polices. a. If you deliberately or negligently give another student access to your work, or accounts, or computers containing work which is subsequently copied by that student, it will be assumed that you have assisted that student in producing and claiming work that is not their own and penalties will apply under University Academic Misconduct polices. b. It is your responsibility to keep that your work secure. 12 6) Please retain a copy of your assignment. Please note that assignments must be typed or word processed and the first page must include: • Your student number in the top right hand corner; • Date of submission directly under this, followed by your; • Electronically read word count (does not include the coversheet, nor the References and Appendix sections); • You will label your file for submission: TutorSurname_StudentID_StudentSurname.docx Assignments will be submitted electronically they must use Microsoft Word 2003 (or a later version), or compliant software such as Mac Pages, or Apache Open Office. The submitted file must be in *.pdf *.doc, *.docx, or *.rtf format. Formatting, spelling, grammatical, typographical and referencing errors may result in the non-award of marks. Assignments must comply with Calibri 12 point font, using 1.5 line spacing. Paragraphs must be fully justified at both the left and right margin. Your left and right margins should be set to 3.5 cm to allow space for comments to be made by the examiner. Grading Criteria and Feedback 1) Hurdle requirement Pass/Not Pass: a. The item has been presented in the medium of written English. Sentences are structured and conform to academic writing guidelines. The paper has an identifiable structure including an introduction, a main body, and conclusion. The paper follows the LTU-Harvard Referencing Style and shows evidence of having used Mendeley. The examiner can proceed with further assessment. b. The item has not been presented in the medium of written English and the examiner cannot proceed with further assessment. Sentences are not structured and do not conform to academic writing guidelines. The paper does not have an identifiable structure including an introduction, a main body, and conclusion. The paper does not follow the LTU-Harvard Referencing Style or show evidence of having used Mendeley. 2) Selection of two tutorial case studies. This section has a total potential value of 10 marks: a. The paper comprehensively assembles the information from the selected tutorial exercises. b. The paper effectively assembles the information from the selected tutorial exercises. c. The paper adequately assembles the information from the selected tutorial exercises, with evidence of having used the Mendeley research software in the appendices. d. The paper does not adequately assemble the information from the selected tutorial exercises. 3) Academic Journal Articles. This section has a total potential value of 10 marks: a. The paper comprehensively refers to 15 or more academic journal articles and synthesises information from these references using the LTU-Harvard Referencing Style , with evidence of having used the Mendeley research software in the appendices. b. The paper effectively refers to 15 academic journal articles and synthesises information from these references using the LTU-Harvard Referencing Style, with evidence of having used the Mendeley research software in the appendices. c. The paper adequately refers to 15 academic journal articles and makes some attempt to synthesise information from these references using the LTU-Harvard Referencing Style, with evidence of having used the Mendeley research software in the appendices. d. The paper does not refer to 15 academic journal articles and makes little or no attempt to synthesise information from these references it does not use the LTU-Harvard Referencing Style, with evidence of having used the Mendeley research software in the appendices. 4) Application of management theory and principles learned in MGT3SMG tutorials. This section has a total potential value of 10 marks: a. The paper comprehensively describes the following concepts: external environmental analysis, Five Forces analysis and sources of sustainable competitive advantage and relates to the organisations in the case studies chosen. b. The paper effectively describes the following concepts: external environmental analysis, Five Forces 13 analysis and sources of sustainable competitive advantage and relates to the organisations in the case studies chosen. c. The paper adequately describes the following concepts: external environmental analysis, Five Forces analysis and sources of sustainable competitive advantage and relates to the organisations in the case studies chosen. d. The paper does not describe the following concepts: external environmental analysis, Five Forces analysis and sources of sustainable competitive advantage and nor how they relate to the organisations in the case studies chosen. 5) Examiner’s Final Comment. This section has a total potential value of (up to) 10 marks.
