Personal Application Assignment (2000 words, individual)
A personal application assignment is a structured written analysis of a real event in which you participated. Personal Application Assignments serve four important purposes in the course. First, they offer a way for you to practice using some of the concepts we learn about in class in your daily life. Second, they take you through a disciplined process of situation analysis and problem solving, which are useful managerial skills. Third, the PAAs offer a way for me to work with you individually in the course. And finally, they are one means by which I evaluate your work in the course.
Choosing a good topic is essential. Select an experience that relates to the assigned course topics. It should be an experience that you want to understand better (e.g., there was something about it that you do not totally understand, that intrigues you, that made you realize that you lacked certain managerial skills, or that was problematic or significant for you). The topic must be meaty enough to take it through the entire learning cycle, as will be described further in class. The incident does not have to be work-related. An incident in any setting that relates to the course topics is acceptable. You should divide your paper into the four sections described below and label each section: Concrete
Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualization, and Active Experimentation. The concrete experience section briefly describes what happened in the experience. This should include a description of the facts, the feelings you experienced, and your thoughts and perceptions during the experience. The key task of reflective observation is to consider the experience from different points of view. The main skill to work on is perspective-taking or what some people call -re-framing.- By relating assigned readings and lectures to what you have experienced, you are developing and demonstrating your ability to use conceptual material. This process of abstract conceptualization will help you refine your thinking about people and organizations. Finally, the active experimentation section of the paper should summarize the practical lessons you have learned and the action steps you will take to make yourself more effective in the future.
